Behind the build | Great Eastern Drive – Apsley

A look back at some of the machinery, earthworks and teamwork behind the Great Eastern Drive – Apsley project.

Delivered across five sections of road, the project included 8 kilometres of safety upgrades, with careful staging helping the team progress the works while minimising disruption for road users.

Looking back | Midland Highway – South Sections

Completed in 2024, the Midland Highway – South Sections project was one of Shaw’s major road projects, delivering safety upgrades across more than 32 kilometres near Ross and Oatlands.

The works included highway widening, new overtaking lanes, drainage and culvert structures, and more than 58 kilometres of wire rope and guard rail safety barrier.

Delivering works of this scale while keeping traffic moving along one of Tasmania’s key transport routes required careful planning and staging throughout the project. The team also used innovative ground improvement methods, including lime stabilisation, helping reduce truck movements and the project’s environmental footprint.

We’re proud to have played a part in improving safety and connectivity for the communities, businesses and road users who rely on the Midland Highway every day.

The project’s quality and ex*****on were also recognised with a 2024 Civil Contractors Federation Tasmania Earth Award.

A significant project and one we remain very proud to have delivered.

Deep underground inside Rhyndaston Tunnel 👏

Working inside a 150-year-old rail tunnel required precision, planning and constant awareness of the environment around the crew.

From specialised welding works through to continuous air monitoring and confined-space controls, every part of the project demanded a disciplined and highly skilled approach.

The conditions may have been challenging, but the results speak for themselves.

A fantastic effort from the Shaw Contracting and TasRail teams involved throughout delivery.

Great to be involved in this important stage of the SWISA project and to be working alongside Tasmanian Irrigation to carefully plan the Bass Highway crossing, with a strong focus on safety and minimising disruption to road users.

Works are progressing well on the Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme Augmentation project. Installation of the DN1000 trunk main is fast approaching the Bass Highway, and we will soon be undertaking works to install the pipe across the highway. The main will connect the water source at Great Bend Pump Station to most of the scheme, servicing the Moriarty and Wesley Vale loops, as well as the Latrobe and Northdown spur lines.

Where: Bass Highway, near the Oppenheims Road intersection.

When: Continuously from 7 am Tuesday 22 September to 5 pm Thursday 24 September, with the majority of works taking place overnight.

What to expect: We have worked closely with our contractor Shaw Contracting to carefully plan this crossing and minimise disruption to motorists.

Lane closures, traffic lights and reduced speed limits will be in place during night works, with some short delays expected. Works will continue during the day while resurfacing is completed, with lanes reopened and speed limits increased to prevent congestion.

We appreciate your patience as we complete these critical works. Please follow the traffic management in place to ensure the safety of workers on site and road users.

Looking back at Great Eastern Drive – Apsley 👏

Completed in June 2026, the Great Eastern Drive – Apsley project was delivered over approximately 20 months and included safety upgrades across 8 kilometres of road.

The works covered five sections of the Great Eastern Drive and included intersection improvements, new overtaking lanes, drainage works and three bridge structures.

Careful planning and innovative construction staging helped minimise disruption for road users, particularly during the busy tourism season, while delivering a safer and more efficient journey.

We’re proud to look back on another successful project delivered through the hard work, expertise and teamwork of our people.

Great to see the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation moving into its final stages.

Shaw is proud to have played a part in this significant TasWater project, with our works at the Selfs Point treatment site completed earlier this year.

Our team constructed the new Raw Sewage Pump Station and associated pipework on a busy and highly constrained site, working through a number of technical challenges including restricted access, groundwater and difficult ground conditions.

Strong planning, teamwork and close collaboration with TasWater and the wider project team helped keep the works progressing through to completion and handover.

It’s fantastic to see the broader project continuing to take shape as it moves towards commissioning in 2027.
