72 HOURS LATER… DID THE MACHINES ACTUALLY DO THEIR JOB? 👀

Putting drying equipment on site is one thing.

Knowing when it’s actually time to turn it off is another.

We returned to this washing machine escape-of-liquid job after 48 hours to check the environment and, more importantly, the building materials themselves.

30.3°C
32.6% RH
11.9°C dew point

🔥 Thermal imaging:
No temperature anomalies indicative of moisture retention.
Surface temperatures: 32.2°C – 36.0°C

💧 Timber floorboards:
9.8% – 11.2% moisture content

So yes… the place was still warm and toasty. 🔥

But we don't pack up the equipment just because the room feels dry.

2️⃣ AS 3958:2023 – Installation of Ceramic and Stone Tiles

As field technicians in disaster restoration we don’t install membranes or lay tiles. Our job is to investigate structural water damage, map hidden moisture and scope the loss accurately.

Knowing the tiling standard, how buildings are designed, and the common causes of below-ground ingress helps us decide whether we are looking at a sudden event or a longer-term structural issue.

The better we understand how a building is put together, the better we can investigate, dry it properly, control costs, and stop a small leak becoming a sequel.

Because “Close the wall and nobody will ever know” is not a recognised restoration methodology.

Winter is prime time for unwanted guests in your roof cavity.

As temperatures drop, rats and mice will often look for somewhere warm, dry and sheltered — and your roof cavity can look like the perfect accommodation.

But when vermin activity occurs around an area that has also suffered water damage, things can become more complicated.

Water-damaged materials can become contaminated by vermin activity, including urine, faeces, nesting material and other contaminants.

And if insulation has become saturated, it can add significant weight to a ceiling. In the worst-case scenario, a ceiling collapse could allow contaminated insulation and other materials to fall into the living space below.

Hidden Mould: What You Can't See Can Be a Bigger Problem

From the outside, this wall looked completely normal.

No stains. No peeling paint. No odour.

Nothing to see here... or so it seemed.

We cut a small inspection hole...
..and this is what we found.

Mould. And it had been having an absolute field day behind the plasterboard.

The culprit? A cracked roof tile which allowed rainwater to enter undetected. The water made its way through the roof space slowly trickling down inside the wall cavity, feeding mould growth for months.

Because all that moisture was trapped inside the wall, there were virtually no visible signs.

Until one day... the carpet felt wet.

The first suspect was the dog.

He was proven innocent.

Unfortunately, once plasterboard becomes heavily contaminated with mould, it can't simply be cleaned.

The only effective solution is to completely remove the contaminated plasterboard, the framework professionally treated and thoroughly dried, and only then can new plasterboard be installed.

That's the tricky thing about water damage—it rarely announces itself. It often sits quietly behind walls, causing thousands of dollars in damage before anyone realises there's a problem.

Just because a wall looks dry doesn't mean everything behind it is.

If you've noticed a persistent musty smell, had a roof leak, or experienced any water damage, it's worth having it properly investigated before a small issue turns into a much bigger—and far more expensive—repair.
