You might know AUSTRAC as the Australian Government agency that works to detect and prevent money laundering, terrorism financing and other financial crime.

Scammers are now pretending to be AUSTRAC staff, contacting people by phone, email and messaging apps with convincing-looking documents and official-sounding messages.

They may claim you’re being investigated for money laundering or tax offences, that your bank accounts have been frozen, or that you need to make an urgent payment to avoid prosecution or penalties.

Here’s the important bit: AUSTRAC won’t do this.

AUSTRAC will never unexpectedly ask you to:
❌ Transfer money or make a payment
❌ Pay using cryptocurrency
❌ Send money through WhatsApp or Telegram
❌ Provide personal information in response to an unsolicited message

If you receive an unexpected message claiming to be from AUSTRAC, stop and take a moment. Don’t click, pay or share your details. Check the contact independently using official AUSTRAC channels.

Scammers can make things look very official. Don’t let the urgency rush you into a decision.

What happens when you take what you’ve learned at uni and put it into practice?

For UTAS business student Emma Wright, it meant working with our People & Culture team, working on a real project with a real impact – developing a new parental leave policy for Bank of us.

Along the way, Emma researched, collaborated, presented to our Executive team and gained valuable experience that she’ll take into the next step of her career.

It’s also been a great opportunity for our team to share their knowledge and learn from Emma’s fresh perspective.

We’re proud to work with UTAS to create business placement opportunities for young Tasmanians to learn, grow and get a taste of the workplace.
