Another cosy project is complete - our floating bookshelves made of huon pine slabs with raw edges and natural lines. The slab sizes dictated the bookshelf's design - I love letting my available timber sizes and shapes guide the design. It's also the TV entertainment unit with a spotted gum timber panel that hides power and media equipment for the TV.

I finally found time to complete a little project for myself - my dream home office!

I didn't want to break the budget so I used construction plywood for the cabinetry, painted black for the carcasses and stained and varnished for the doors and bookshelves.

I made a floating desk out of old slabs of huon pine that I jointed to get the right width and then stained with the same merbau varnish as the cabinet. Shallow under-desk drawers hold my stationary and I got it to float by attaching to the wall and to the cabinet on the left, giving me unobstructed leg room underneath.

I made a false wall out of some walnut acoustic panelling which allowed me to mount my monitor on the wall and run all the cabling out of sight. I'll be replacing my mouse and keyboard sometime with bluetoothed ones to make the desk completely wire free :)

We all love the idea of growing our own food but have to deal with little furry thieves pinching our hard earned veggies! Two recent jobs of mine will keep those pilfering possums at bay!

In both cases, my customers wanted large (10x4m plus) enclosures with enough headroom to grow fruit trees (up to 2.7m). I used timber sleepers for the in-ground "foundations" to block any tunnellers and cheaper rough-cut treated pine for the framework. Both jobs then had a pause to allow the timber to age and the customer to paint/oil the frame before I came back to install the structural strapping and 25mm galvanised mesh. A couple of custom doors, wide enough to fit a fully laden wheelbarrow, finished each job.

Now its just up to the owners to fill it full of growbays and enjoy many years of theft free home grown veggies and fruit.

I love my books, so it was a delight when I had three requests for custom bookshelves over the last quarter. Each one was a challenging build in their own right, but I am very happy with how each came out.

The first was a full library conversion, with floor to ceiling book cases (including cornice and skirting boards) in an old house. The customer wanted the option to add a ladder and sliding rail later on, so I incorporated a structual bar almost at the top so we could attach that in future. As always, corners present challenges but I made these L shaped to maximise his bookspace. Finishing everything in classic Emerald Green to match the existing walls made it appear as if the cases had always been there.

Second one was a little simpler, but the customer wanted a dark finish. I used pine and stained it with a dark walnut finish - it took a few experiments to get the dark lustre the customer wanted, but we were both happy with the result. Like the Green Case this one was floor to ceiling so a little bit of trim finished off the job nicely.

And my third build was answered the question - how do you fit six book cases into the space for four? Well, in this case we put them on rails! These bookcase went into a space formerly occupied by built in wardrobe. I put four across the back and then two in front that slide from side to side on a rail system. It makes the maximum use of available space while adding a touch of fun.
