16km and a sore foot or two (or sixty) later, our team of 30 completed our annual fundraising hike via Werribee Gorge. 🚶

This month, we're raising funds to support the work of A Rocha Kenya who are parcel-by-parcel securing coastal forest land in Northern Kenya to protect it from clearing.

Our hope is to purchase a 36 ha block to add onto their Dakatcha Reserve, to protect endangered animals like the Golden-Rumped Sengi who are at risk of dramatic habitat loss.

Werribee Gorge was a healthy challenge with plenty of inclines that made us feel like we earned the donations that've come in so far...

One year on... how's the growth on this Euc at Upotipotpon? 🚀

We had a beautiful morning walking & talking at our field morning out at our Upotipotpon property last Saturday, as we explored the work that's taken place here through the BushBank Program.

Now that the site has reached a stage such as this, we'll be bringing it onto the market soon to find its next steward. It was a lovely chance to roam the site, introduce landowners to the revegetation models used here, and imagine what a lifestyle on this slice of land would look like.

Thanks to Yorta Yorta Elder Dixon Patten for the magnificent Welcome to Country & Smoking Ceremony, to project partners and sharing their part in the journey, to local conservationist Dr. Doug Robinson who explained the role Upotipotpon will play in the broader landscape and to you who braved the weather forecast and joined us on site.

Don’t be perturbed by its long nose! 🤥

For the last few years, we’ve raised funds to support conservation work across the globe in Northern Kenya. This year, we’re stepping things up.

The Golden-rumped sengi is a small African mammal, classified as endangered. It’s only found in one small part of our Earth, and that same region is unfortunately being routinely cleared for pineapple farming. This has dangerous effects on the life of this unique shrew.

We’re partnering with A Rocha Kenya and their Dakatcha Nature Reserve with the goal of purchasing a 36-acre plot to add to the reserve, and secure the protection of coastal forest habitat for the sengi and other local fauna communities.

The cost of the plot will be $20,000 so we’re inviting you to join us in shifting the story of the Golden-rumped sengi.

On October 9th, our team will walk through the Werribee Gorge to do our bit to ‘step up’. Through the month of October, we invite our friends, partners and fellow-sengi lovers (it’s okay if you’re a new convert) to contribute with a financial donation. Together, we hope to purchase this land and offer an alternative future for the critters that call this region home.

Last year, Elizabeth and Russell made the jump into stewarding their own conservation property. It hasn't all been easy, but it's been a unique journey, marked by discoveries of flora and fauna, unexpected learnings and weekends in the bush. 🏕

It's not all sunny days and fairytale seeding success stories during planting season.

Just ask Oscar and Hayden who came up against the bogging of the season at our Germania property...

Fortunately, rescue ensued and the team got back on their way to the 30,000+ plants going into the soil at the site this year.

It helps to know that with every seedling that enters the ground, there may be more backstory (and effort!) involved than one might first assume.

It was a privilege to have some of the crew from in Wail join us at our Germania BushBank property to help the reveg team plant seedlings. Some of which they had grown themselves for the site! 🌱

This project will see over 140 hectares of degraded, grazing land revegetated with endangered and important native species like Grey Box, Yellow Gum, Buloke and Droopy Sheoak.

Dalki Garringa (meaning 'Good Growing' in Wergaia) Native Nursery is owned and operated by Barengi Gadjin Land Council and specialises in native plants.

The BushBank Program is built on partnerships between like-minded individuals and organisations, so thank you Dalki Garringa; for your beautiful seedlings and for giving us a hand getting them in the ground!
