Another post of my fave hobby of visiting ‘Gold Rush’ era Victorian towns and their Botanic Gardens. This time it’s Kyneton. It’s a great opportunity to see how trees and plants look when mature (and a reminder of how much space they’ll eventually need).

To mow or not to mow. That’s the dilemma. Pros: great for the bees and pollinating insects, pretty yellow flower heads dancing in the breeze, longer grass is more resilient to heat stress. Cons: puffball seed heads distribute far and wide, neighbours not keen on unruliness! What do you think?

Do your roses look a bit like this? Bad prunes, awkward shape, dieback, diminished blooms. This year, get better roses with a professional maintenance program. Get in touch with- I can help.

Has she gone completely mad? Determined to get at least a handful of apricots this year and still provide a food source for birds and possums. I have used those gifty net bags from the $2 shop to enclose just enough fruit for me. So much easier than trying to net an entire tree!

We all love a good ‘before’ and ‘after’. Here’s a design completed right before Christmas.

What’s going on here?? This is sunburn thanks to 40+ degree Celsius summer days (intensified by reflected heat from hard surfaces). I know it looks awful, but don’t trim it off just yet. The plant is not dead. Leaving the burnt tips on the plant will prevent further burning. You can help prevent sunburn by shading your plants with shade cloth, old bed sheets, an umbrella! - anything that will provide shade and respite. Good luck.

Ballarat Botanic Gardens. I love visiting Victoria’s regional ‘Gold Rush’ towns and especially their gardens. Mostly created in English/formal style with trees planted in the late 1800’s. What always resonates with me is the forethought of others, planting and caring for a wee sapling - knowing they could NEVER see it at maturity! (Also included a pic of the recently renovated fernery - love the fern frond replicated in the paving!).

Think outside the Box! If you’re considering adding spheres or low hedging to your garden design, look a little bit deeper into options other than Buxus. Polygala, Euonymus, Abelia and Viburnum tinus. All super tough and respond well to regular trimming.

Loving the shapes and symmetry in this Brighton garden. Keeping everything looking perfect requires a fortnightly visit from me and Client input in between.

Make the most of the recent November rains (Melbourne) by adding compost and mulch to your garden beds to retain this precious moisture before the summer heat arrives. For inspo, these are the magnificent compost heaps at

Back in June (winter) I was so brave and gave this large rose arbour a severe prune (yep … cue nervous intake of breath from client!) Years of incorrect pruning and sporadic maintenance had caused ugly branching, poor flowering and plenty of dead wood and disease. Spring - Just look at it now !
