🔊 Do your pipes bang or shudder when a tap is turned off?

That noise is water hammer, caused by water suddenly stopping and sending a shock wave through your pipework. It's more than an annoyance. Over time it stresses joints and fittings and can lead to leaks.

The usual causes are high water pressure, loose or unsupported pipes, or a faulty valve. The good news is it's often straightforward to diagnose and fix.

Slow drain? Gurgling? It's not getting better on its own.

A slow drain or a gurgling sound usually means something is building up in the pipe, like fat, hair, wipes or tree roots, and the water is struggling to get past. It rarely clears itself. It tends to get worse until it blocks completely, often at the most inconvenient time.

💧 Is your water bill higher than it should be? Here's a quick test for a hidden leak.

🔸Turn off all taps and appliances (including the dishwasher and washing machine)
🔸Note your water meter reading
🔸Wait 10 minutes without using any water
🔸Check the meter again

If the reading has changed, or the small dial is still moving, you likely have a leak somewhere. Underground and in-wall leaks can run for months without a visible sign, so this test is worth doing every so often, especially if your bill suddenly jumps.

🚫 "Flushable" wipes aren't actually flushable.

The label says one thing, but wipes don't break down like toilet paper. They catch on rough pipe joints, tangle with roots and fat, and build up into blockages that can back up your sewer, sometimes at the worst possible time.

The rule is simple: only p*e, poo and toilet paper go down the toilet. Wipes, cotton buds, dental floss and sanitary products all go in the bin.
