How do we move from AAC awareness to communication access in everyday life?

Join Carol Hegan from The Inclusive Movement for a practical 90-minute webinar on Tuesday 27 October, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm AWST.

We will explore AAC beyond devices, common barriers to communication access, supportive partner habits and ways to make home, education, work and community settings easier to join.

This session is for families and carers, educators, support workers, allied health and disability professionals, and community or service teams. No prior AAC training is required.

Things carers love.

Sometimes the things that make a difference are the everyday moments when someone understands what caring involves and helps make life a little easier.

This Carers Week, we’re recognising those moments:

1. Professionals who’ve read our notes, so we can talk about what matters now.
2. Appointments that run as planned, with early updates when things change.
3. Specific offers, such as “Would a meal on Tuesday help?”
4. Invitations that keep coming, with flexibility to arrive late or leave early.
5. Clear information, time to process and a choice of phone, text or email.
6. People who speak directly to the person we support and respect their choices and communication.
7. Plans shaped by our knowledge, alongside the person we support.
8. Support that follows through, so we can trust the plan and take a breath.
9. Recognition of our own sensory, communication and health needs. Carers can be disabled or neurodivergent, too.
10. Someone who asks about our interests and feelings, making space for our life beyond caring.

Parents, partners, siblings, young carers, relatives and friends all have different experiences. This list will look different for each of us.

At The Inclusive Movement, we believe belonging includes our carers and the people they support.

Practical care and shared responsibility matter throughout the whole year. This Carers week, we say a special thank you to all of the carers for the special and dedicated role they play.

Try leaving the silence open.

Waiting can be an active communication support.

It can mean holding the conversational turn, keeping your attention available and resisting the urge to:

- repeat the question

- rephrase it immediately

- finish the person’s message

- guess too quickly

- move on before they have had time to respond

Repeating or changing a question can restart the person’s processing.

Silence does not necessarily mean that nothing is happening.

Where possible, ask the person what pace works for them. Notice what changes when the conversation is allowed to move at that pace.

Time can be a communication support.

Communication partners do not need to be perfect - but our habits can either reduce or increase pressure...

Four practices that can help:

1. Model
Use the person’s AAC naturally without demanding that they copy or respond.

2. Wait
Allow enough time for the person to process, plan and communicate.

3. Respond
Acknowledge the meaning of the message, including gestures, movement and partial messages.

4. Repair together
If you do not understand, say what you think you understood and ask what would help.

A person should not have to prove that they can use AAC before their communication is respected.

AAC is communication - not a test.

Week 2 mission: Wait, listen and respond.

Communication can take time.

A person may need time to process what has been said, decide whether they want to respond, plan a message, navigate their AAC or coordinate the movement needed to communicate.

This week, practise:

- slowing the pace

- leaving space after a question

- keeping your attention available

- noticing body language, gesture, AAC and other communication modes

- responding to the meaning of the message

- respecting silence, refusal and changes of mind

Communication is a shared interaction - not a speed test.

Today’s action: choose one conversation and consciously leave more space.
