If slide 2 looks familiar, you've been in a Sydney home built in the 70s. Gold floral tiles, the trusty old suite, a shower squeezed into the corner — it did its job for a very long time.
Here's what changed, beyond the obvious:
✨ Travertine-look tiles floor to ceiling — the room reads twice the size in the same footprint
🚿 A full walk-in shower where the old cubicle stood
🪞 Mirrored cabinet the width of the vanity — storage was the old room's real shortage
✅ In-wall cistern and wall-hung fittings — nothing cluttering the floor, nothing hard to clean
Same walls. Completely different room to live in.
Every choice here was made at the design consult, in this home, before any price was discussed — and the finished room matches that first conversation.

Same room. Swipe. 👉
This powder room at Sans Souci served the house faithfully since roughly 1975 — beige tiles, patterned black floor, gold taps and all.
The owners didn't want safe. So the design leaned in:
🤎 Terracotta floor tiles laid in herringbone
🤍 Handmade-look gloss tiles, floor to ceiling
🗿 A solid travertine basin and pedestal — one carved piece, no vanity in sight
✨ In-wall cistern, brushed nickel tapware, backlit mirror on a stone ledge
Everything old came out — floor, walls, plumbing, the lot — and the waterproofing and wall prep behind those glossy tiles got the same care as the parts you can see. That's the bit that matters in 20 years.
Small room. Big call. Beautifully worth it.

Before we touch it, we walk it. 📋
This is the next bathroom at Milperra — original bath, separate shower, one long bench-top vanity. It's served the home well, and it's full of the decisions that make or break a renovation:

🚿 The shower cubicle in the corner — does the layout stay, or does the room work harder rearranged?

The before wasn't a disaster. That's the point. Swipe. 👉
Chippendale's old bathroom had been renovated once already — white panels, working fixtures, perfectly fine. And that's all it was. Fine.
Here's what designed looks like instead:
🖤 A fluted matte-black bath, echoed in the fluted walnut vanity, echoed again in the curved fluted-glass screen — one idea, carried through the whole room
🌿 Handmade-look sage tiles stacked vertically, drawing the eye up
🪞 An arched mirror cabinet with real storage behind it — because storage regret is Australia's most common renovation complaint, and we design it out first
✨ Matte black tapware, a stone-shelved niche, soft underlight on the vanity for the 2am visit
Every one of those decisions was made with the owners at the design consult, before a price was discussed. The room didn't get lucky. It got planned.
Fine is easy to live with. This is hard to leave. The owners fell back in love with the space — and that's always the job.

Chippendale, complete. Take the full walk-through. 🛁
From demo day to this: every layer of this bathroom went in the right order, for the right reasons — protection down, old room out, sheeting, waterproofing, tiles set out off level lines, fit-off, clean, handover.
No shortcuts got us here. Just a plan the owners shaped at the first consult, and a build that followed it.

We got to the final clean at Chippendale and found this waiting in the shower niche. 🤎
A handwritten card and a box of Favourites, addressed to the team.
We talk a lot on this page about waterproofing and setout and fixed prices — the mechanics of doing the job properly. But this is the actual finish line: handing a home back to people who are beyond happy to be in it, and knowing they'd have us back.
Lily, Will — thank you. The Cherry Ripes didn't survive the drive home.

Chippendale — done. ✨
A home that's stood for the better part of a century, and a bathroom built to stand for the decades ahead of it.
You saw the layers go in: the sheeting nobody compliments, the setout measured off level lines because old walls don't do straight. This is why those stages get the fuss — so the finished room looks effortless.
Inner-city homes ask more of a renovation. Tighter rooms, older bones, no room for error — and all the more satisfying when it comes together like this.
New space, old soul, same address. The owners wouldn't have it any other way.

Tiling week at Chippendale — swipe for the part of a renovation you never usually see. 🛠️
📐 Slide by slide:
✅ The grey coating on those walls? Waterproofing membrane — every wet-area wall sealed before a single tile went on
✅ Laser lines and a spirit level — in a home this age, the walls stopped being straight decades ago, so every course is set out off level lines instead
✅ Tiles numbered by hand before they go up — laid out, checked, then fixed in order so the pattern runs true
✅ Floor tiles under levelling clips — locked flat while the adhesive cures, so every join sits flush
✅ And the payoff: the shower niche, wrapped in and finished with a stone shelf
None of this shows up in the after photos. All of it decides whether the after photos last.

New project, older home — the inner-city ones always keep our tilers honest. Walls that have settled for a century don't forgive lazy setout, so everything gets measured off level lines, not off the walls.

Slow hands, straight lines. That's the whole trick.
