Started out as a deadwooding job. Ended as a good reminder of why it pays to take a closer look.

We were called out to clear the deadwood from a big old red gum recently — routine work. But while we were up in the canopy, we found something we couldn’t walk away from: a large conk fungus growing right in the main fork, the same fork hanging directly over the customer’s shed.

For anyone who hasn’t come across one, a conk (or bracket fungus) isn’t just a harmless mushroom. It’s the fruiting body of a fungus that’s already eating the wood from the inside out. By the time it shows on the outside, the decay within is usually well and truly established.

We flagged it with the customer straight away and talked through the risk. With the shed sitting right underneath and the rot sitting in a major structural fork, the decision was made to remove the tree.

We knew we’d made the right call the moment we started cutting. The decay ran a full 5 metres up the trunk past the fungus, and another 3 metres below it — that’s 8 metres of rotten timber where there should have been solid, sound wood.

That’s the danger with internal decay: a tree can look perfectly healthy from the ground while it’s quietly losing the strength that keeps it standing. A failure in that fork, over that shed, could have been a very different story.

We’re preservation-first here at TLC — we’d always rather save a tree than take one down. But when safety’s on the line, the honest call wins every time.

Got a big tree near the house or shed? If you’ve noticed anything odd — fungus, cracks, dead limbs or hollows — it’s worth getting checked. A lot cheaper than the alternative.
