This deck was peeling, bubbling and holding water across every exposed section, just 18 months after a full strip-back and recoat from another company.

Some areas started peeling within the first few weeks. The inside edges, never exposed to sun and rain, were still intact. That’s the giveaway: this wasn’t a timber problem, it was a prep and product problem. Either moisture wasn’t removed from the timber before coating, or the product wasn’t suited to the exposure. Peeling that’s limited to sun and rain exposed faces only is the signature of bad prep, not bad wood.

We took it back to bare timber and started again. Two coats of Intergrain NaturalStain in Cypress, a system that won’t peel, flake or blister when the prep is done right. We made sure it was.

Boat decks use hard film-forming coatings like two-part polyurethanes and marine teak sealers. They’re built for one job: keep water out at all costs.

But your home’s timber deck? It needs something completely different.

Here’s why marine products fail on residential decks:

🌡️ Your deck moves. Heat, rain, and humidity cause timber to expand and contract daily. Hard marine coatings crack and peel — they can’t flex with it.

🌿 Different timber, different needs. Boat decks are almost always teak — dense, oily, and stable. Your deck is likely spotted gum, merbau, or pine. Completely different absorption rates.

Jane hired someone to refresh her deck before listing her house for sale. They painted it red — wrong colour entirely, patchy coverage, no proper prep. The deck looked worse than it did before the job started.
