Are you struggling to find a good block in Hobart? Vacant blocks in the better suburbs are incredibly rare and tend to be uber expensive. It makes building new in the popular suburbs of Hobart a tad challenging.

There is, however, a solution. Why don't you consider a knock down and rebuild?

The house in the pictures sits on a block that had a very uninspiring 1940's bungalow on it. The reason the owners decided to knockdown and rebuild were the stunning views over the Derwent and the fact that the house sits in a quality, established neighbourhood.

So, instead of moving, or compromising on a house in a suburb you don't really know, or spending years renovating around problems you can never quite fix, with a knock down and rebuild you get to start afresh.

There are a lot of words that are thrown around nowadays to over hype something or someone on social media. You know the ones - epic, awesome, stunning, insane, mind blowing etc...

My particular favourite is the word "legendary". Generally, it is completely over-used.

However, I'm about to use it properly to describe this man - Rod Young. Rod is a legend in the true meaning of the word.

What he doesn't know about building could be written on the back of a postage stamp that had been cut into quarters. A better Construction Manager we could not have wished for in our wildest dreams.

He's been with us at Blue Gum Design + Build since the very beginning - over a decade now. Apart from his encyclopaedic knowledge of all thing’s construction, he has been loyal and supportive to myself and a great mentor to the rest of the team. He is one of those men who says little, but when he does speak, you listen. Old school to the core, one hundred percent reliable and a truly outstanding example of a good and honourable man.

Rod has, after 45 plus years in the industry, decided it is time for him to retire. He will be sorely missed.

I personally owe Rod a great deal. Everyone at Blue Gum does. So, I hope you will join us in wishing Rod, our friend and colleague, the very best in his well-deserved retirement.

This gorgeous home is a masterclass in how the right material palette can transform a build.

Crisp Spandek steel cladding that will look as good in 30 years as it does today. Spotted gum highlights that bring warmth, character and that unmistakably Tasmanian feel. And a reclaimed red brick subfloor that nods to the past while grounding the whole design firmly in the landscape.

But the real star of the show? That deck. Elevated above the surrounding bush, it looks directly out over Kettering marina.

When you are narrowing down your search for a building designer or architect, look for one who is fascinated by the small details, the textures, the colours, the personalisation of your build.

When our clients asked for floor-to-ceiling glazing that would run the full height of their two-storey farm house, we knew exactly what that would take — a structural steel frame engineered to carry the load, specialist vacuum lifting equipment, a crane, a very steady crew, and a fair bit of collective breath-holding on site.

Those glass panels are enormous. Getting each one off the truck, up into position and perfectly seated into the frame without a scratch is one of those jobs that looks almost effortless when it goes well — and is anything but.

But here's the thing. When you're standing inside this home and looking out through that wall of glass, none of that will matter.
