TASMAN COUNCIL CHAMBERS REFURBISHMENT Pt 2

To honour its remarkable setting on the Tasman Peninsula, the interior incorporates warm local materials including rich Tasmanian Blackwood and custom carpets inspired by the geometric forms of the nearby Tessellated Pavement.

Beyond creating an inclusive, welcoming space, the project champions sustainability by significantly reducing demolition waste and embodied carbon, ensuring this important asset is fit for the future.

Creative Solutions: Thinking Outside the Square

JAWS was proud to have our Director, Hanz Lee, speak on a panel for the Australia New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine (ANZSPM) conference last Saturday.
Hanz spoke to the panel topic of “Creative Solutions: Food for Thought, Space to Breathe, Music to our Ears”. He talked about his design experience in palliative care and ways in which spaces can best be catered towards the patient whilst working within the strict building codes found in health services in Tasmania.

Hanz used a render of a project he is currently working on to show how effective and creative design can be in palliative care spaces. With good design, palliative care can be a comfortable place for shared stories, quiet company, and everyday family moments. Hanz talked about how different design elements have impact on a patient and their loved ones. For example, an outlook above the bed can offer calm and connection beyond the room.

He joined the panel conversation with Maxine Glanger (Chair and Palliative Medicine Specialist at Palliative Care Service Northern Tasmania), Heather Kent (CEO of Palliative Care Tasmania), Emily Sanzaro (Occupational Therapist), and Paul Amourgis & Carly Palmer (Van Diemens Land Creamery).

40 YEARS ... from the archives

As we continue to celebrate 40 years of JAWS, we’re taking a look back through the archives at some of the projects that have shaped our practice along the way.

This chapter takes us through the 1990s and into the 2000s, a period of change, growth and some projects that may still look familiar today.

While the decades, people and projects continue to evolve, many of the things we value have remained constant: thoughtful responses to place, enduring relationships and architecture designed for the people who use it.

40 years....and a story that goes back even further.

Forty years ago, John Jacob, Jamieson Allom, Neil Wade along with David Button registered the company JACOB ALLOM WADE PTY LTD. The practice is significantly older than its trading name though. When John Jacob was starting out he joined forces with the experienced and renowned Harry Hope and formed HOPE & JACOB ARCHITECTS way back in the 1950's. Harry Hope already had a major influence on Hobarts architectural scene since the 1930s.

Now we are known as JAWS ARCHITECTS. Our founders and leaders may have passed on the baton, but we know that we have them to thank for laying a solid foundation built on vision, respect and a genuine desire to make our built environment a place where we can thrive.

TASMAN COUNCIL CHAMBERS REFURBISHMENT

We’re excited to share a look at the newly refurbished Tasman Council Chambers!
After more than five decades of service, the existing building has been thoughtfully transformed into a contemporary, light-filled workplace designed to better serve both our community and the people who work within it.

Working within the existing footprint, the redesign focuses on improving accessibility, enhancing public engagement, and fostering internal collaboration. By removing enclosed offices, natural light is now able to pe*****te deeper into the floor plan, opening up shared views of the surrounding landscape and improving daily connections between staff and visitors.

COAL RIVER FARM

The JAWS team has recently completed the commercial fit-out of the new Coal River Farm tenancy in the Hobart International Airport.

The project is defined by two key ideas: storytelling and movement. Storytelling walls communicate Coal River Farm through its farm, chocolate, cheese, w**e and Tasmanian identity. The layout was organised around two clear pathways drawing passengers into the tenancy towards the counter, chocolate displays and storytelling walls. These pathways were reinforced through feature ceiling lighting, creating a visual cue that guides movement through the space. The furniture layout was then aligned with these routes to maintain clear circulation while strengthening the overall spatial organisation.

We are pleased to have delivered the new Breast Care Centre for the Department of Health Tasmania.

Designed to create a calm, welcoming and supportive environment, the centre uses natural materials, soft forms, integrated planting, considered lighting and graphics to create a less clinical and more human-centred experience.

Staff wellbeing was equally important, with dedicated spaces providing comfort and respite for the clinical team.

A modest but meaningful project that reflects our belief in the role thoughtful architecture can play in supporting dignity, wellbeing and the overall experience of care.

Thank you to the Department of Health, clinicians, consultants, contractor and broader project team for their collaboration in bringing the centre to life.

PAST PROJECT | CASCADE BREWERY BAR

Completed in 2020, JAWS designed a tasting bar and restaurant that celebrated both the history of Cascade Brewery and the remarkable landscape that surrounds it.
Two previously disconnected spaces were brought together to create a warm, inviting venue that balances heritage character with contemporary hospitality. Rich brass detailing, a striking U-shaped bar and a deep Cascade green ceiling establish a bold identity, while expansive glazing draws the gardens, brewery and views towards kunanyi / Mt Wellington into the experience.

LAUNCESTON HOSPICE

Some projects remind us that architecture is ultimately about people. The Launceston Hospice is one of them.

This project represents a rare opportunity to design a place that supports people and families at one of the most profound moments in life.

We believe that a hospice is a place of care, dignity, comfort, and connection.

The project also carries a unique challenge - carefully adapting a heritage building to support modern hospice care. Respecting the character and history of the existing structure while creating spaces that meet contemporary healthcare needs has been a thoughtful and rewarding process for the team.

Our design approach has focused on creating an environment that feels calm, familiar, and deeply human. Rather than a clinical setting, the hospice is envisioned as a series of gentle, domestic-scaled spaces connected to gardens, natural light, and the Tasmanian landscape.

Projects like this rely on the dedication of many people. We are thankful to be working alongside the Department of Health , stakeholders, consultants and the wider community who are deeply committed to making this hospice a reality for Northern Tasmania.

It is a privilege for our team to contribute in a small way to a project that will mean so much to so many.

We look forward to seeing this important community facility take shape.
