Nyrstar Australia - Hobart

The people behind the Hobart Zinc Works do far more than you might imagine.

Our team of around 550 people includes tradespeople, engineers, metallurgists, scientists and many others, all bringing different skills and experiences to our operation.

As our industry continues to evolve, so will the skills we need. That presents an exciting opportunity to build on the capability we have today while developing the next generation of Tasmanians who will take our industry forward.

You don’t necessarily have to leave Tasmania to build an interesting, highly skilled career. Sometimes the opportunity is right here.

Read Isabel, Robert and Ian’s stories below.

Our economic contribution doesn’t stop at the gates of the Hobart Zinc Works.

Nyrstar Hobart supports more than 304 local businesses, the equivalent of 1,981 Tasmanian jobs, and contributes $513.6 million to the state’s economy each year.

Crisp Bros. & Haywards is one of those local businesses, with a relationship with Nyrstar stretching back 40 years.

In The Mercury’s Future Tasmania series, Construction Manager Ken Cox shares what that partnership means for their statewide team and why strong industry matters to businesses and communities across Tasmania.

It’s a reminder that the value of industry reaches far beyond our site gates, supporting businesses, jobs, families and communities across Tasmania.

We were proud to be part of The Mercury’s 2026 Future Tasmania event, where our Australian CEO, Wendy McMillan, joined the conversation about the opportunities and challenges shaping Tasmania’s future workforce.

For more than 100 years, Nyrstar Hobart has supported skilled jobs and careers for generations of Tasmanians. And those skills will be just as important as we look to the future.

As Wendy put it:
“Just as a Formula 1 team cannot succeed with a driver alone, a smelter depends on scientists, engineers, technicians, tradespeople and operators working together. It is one of the most technically complex manufacturing environments in the country.”

With growing demand for the metals and materials that support advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and emerging technologies, Tasmania has an opportunity to build on its proud industrial heritage.

“The Zinc Works has been part of Tasmania’s past century, and it should play a credible and valuable role in the next one.”

Tasmania’s industrial future is full of opportunity. With the right skills, investment, and collaboration, we can help make that happen.

From Formula 1-style precision to a hidden critical metal with defence and tech applications – there’s more happening inside Hobart’s Zinc Works than most Tasmanians realise.

Welcoming new people into our business is one of the most important investments we can make in the future of our site, our industry, and our community.

Recently, we brought together our newest Trainee Operators for an induction session to learn more about the zinc works and why safety is our number one priority.

Some of our trainees have already been with us for up to six months. By staggering start dates and welcoming smaller groups at a time, our teams can provide the support, training and mentoring needed to help every new starter build confidence and succeed.

We’re proud to share that our trainee numbers have now reached 76 — a record for the site and a strong sign of the opportunities being created for the next generation entering the industry.

Please join us in welcoming our newest recruits to the team: Kaya Reeva, Toshi Hosokawa, Juan Perez Devia, Jarryd Klemm, Damon McMurray, Jordan McCarthy, Stuart MacDonald, Oscar Cusick, Josh Woolley, Hollie Targett, High Dickson, Archie Sawers, Edward Hallett, Jack Rader, Simon Lie, Reuben Cox, Jacob Townsend, Ruby Brown and Kenneth Izediunor.

We look forward to seeing each of them grow and thrive as part of the Nyrstar Hobart team.

We’re proud to celebrate Lachlan Tatchell, who was recently recognised at the TasTAFE Trade Excellence Awards with the Overall Second Year Apprentice (South) award 🏆👏

The Trade Excellence Awards recognise apprentices who demonstrate exceptional commitment, skill, and performance throughout their training. Award recipients are nominated by their TasTAFE teachers, with support and endorsement from their employers.

Lachlan joined the Nyrstar Hobart team in early 2025 as a Mechanical Apprentice and has already made a strong impression through his dedication, hard work, and positive attitude.

Congratulations, Lachlan, on this outstanding achievement. We’re excited to support your continued growth and success at Nyrstar 🎉
