Welcoming new people into our business is one of the most important investments we can make in the future of our site, our industry, and our community.

Recently, we brought together our newest Trainee Operators for an induction session to learn more about the zinc works and why safety is our number one priority.

Some of our trainees have already been with us for up to six months. By staggering start dates and welcoming smaller groups at a time, our teams can provide the support, training and mentoring needed to help every new starter build confidence and succeed.

We’re proud to share that our trainee numbers have now reached 76 — a record for the site and a strong sign of the opportunities being created for the next generation entering the industry.

We’re proud to celebrate Lachlan Tatchell, who was recently recognised at the TasTAFE Trade Excellence Awards with the Overall Second Year Apprentice (South) award 🏆👏

The Trade Excellence Awards recognise apprentices who demonstrate exceptional commitment, skill, and performance throughout their training. Award recipients are nominated by their TasTAFE teachers, with support and endorsement from their employers.

Lachlan joined the Nyrstar Hobart team in early 2025 as a Mechanical Apprentice and has already made a strong impression through his dedication, hard work, and positive attitude.

Today we announced the appointment of Ms Wendy McMillan as Chief Executive Officer, Nyrstar Australia, at a pivotal time for our Australian business as we progress our metals modernisation program.

Ms McMillan is a highly accomplished executive with deep experience leading complex, asset‑intensive organisations. She has held senior regional leadership roles at Wabtec Corporation and Bombardier Transportation and served as CEO, Rolling Stock Development Division, Transport for Victoria (TFV), where she led large‑scale operational and business transformation programs across multi‑site operations; as well as a number of board and industry body positions, including Keppel Infrastructure Trust’s Ventura Bus opco and Government-appointed Queensland Rail. Ms McMillan will commence with Nyrstar Australia on 6 July 2026.

Today, Hobart GM Todd Milne held a joint press conference with Minister Tim Ayres and Premier Jeremy Rockliff in Hobart at the same time as Pirie GM Darin Cooper was with Premier Peter Malinauskas, Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis and Geoff Brock MP in Adelaide, announcing confirmation of Nyrstar Australia’s next phase of transitionary funding from the Australian, South Australian and Tasmanian Governments to progress its Australian metals modernisation program.

The $105 million package will support Nyrstar Australia to progress feasibility studies for modernising its operations in Port Pirie and Hobart – including how they can expand production of critical and strategic minerals and metals – positioning them to compete in the next generation of global minerals and metals production and continue providing an important sovereign capability for Australia.

Speaking in Hobart, Minister Ayres described the importance of Australia building its position in critical metal supply chains which are so vital for information technology data centres and the digital and defence economies.

We were delighted to welcome Alison Lai, CEO, and Zoe Vandervelde, Manager of Community Fundraising from Cancer Council Tasmania to our site today to present them with a cheque for $15,033 - raised through our employee-led Nyrstar Hobart Charity Golf Day. 🌸⛳️

Our General Manager, Todd Milne, and Phil Brown, one of the event organisers, joined the presentation in recognition of everyone who contributed to this fantastic team effort.

This donation will help Cancer Council Tasmania continue their vital work supporting Tasmanians affected by cancer.

What a day!

Last Friday, Nyrstar Hobart held its annual Charity Golf Day, raising $15,033 for Cancer Council Tasmania.

Despite the weather, the enthusiasm of our players, the generosity of our sponsors, and the friendly competition on the course shone through. 😊

🌟 Big Welcome to our newest 2026 Trainee Operators! 🌟

We recently rolled out the welcome mat for our second intake of trainee operators for 2026! 🎉

We’re excited to have another 21 enthusiastic trainees joining the team, each bringing unique experiences, fresh ideas, and plenty of energy.

After a great start with their induction, the group has begun a two-year learning journey both on site and with Tas TAFE and MIWT, building the skills and confidence that will set them up for success.
We can’t wait to see how they grow and make their mark across our operations.

Congratulations to our apprentice, Jacinta Webberley who has been recognised as one of two recipients of the Rotary Club of Glenorchy’s Lew Fowler Award for 2026 - an honour celebrating outstanding apprentices who demonstrate excellence in their trade and a commitment to their TasTAFE studies.

Currently in her second year of a Mechanical Apprenticeship with Nyrstar Hobart, Jacinta is a valued member of our Roast Maintenance Team, where she continues to develop her skills and passion for her trade.

We’re proud to see her dedication and enthusiasm acknowledged by the community.
