Australian Sustainable Hardwoods Australia’s hardwood and mass timber experts | MASSLAM | Engineered timber flooring | Glacial Oak | Australian Oak | Plantation Oak | IronOak | IronAsh

Australian Sustainable Hardwoods (ASH) is a privately owned Australian timber mill and advanced manufacturer. Established over 30 years ago, ASH has grown to become one of the largest hardwood mills in Australia; and Australia's largest hardwood manufacturer. Utilising automation and economy of scale, ASH operates 6 on-site manufacturing lines to value add timber from log to finished product. These include moulding, laminating, finger-jointing, deep splitting, set length docking and mass-timber production. Timber species include Victorian ash, American Oak, Plantation Oak, Radiata Pine and Mountain Grey Gum. We do things differently here at ASH and it’s what makes our products so recognisable in the market. We value innovation and efficiency within each of our 6 manufacturing lines. ASH is truly unique, and for good reason – to offer the customer high quality timber products at an affordable price. For example, our location was carefully selected many years ago that naturally allows the right amount of sun and air flow to slowly equalise the timber before kiln drying. Our commitment to quality by ultrasound scanning and grading means each board is optimised to get the best product possible. Combine that with over 30 years laminating experience and you get a superior option for your next project.

A big congratulations to Bohane Campo Architects on Enclave House, winner of the Residential Class 1 – New Building category at the 27th Australian Timber Design Awards! Congratulations also to everyone who collaborated on this award-winning project.

Our very own Daniel Wright had the pleasure of presenting the award on behalf of ASH as the category sponsor. A beautiful home and a well-deserved win!

What if your walls, floors and ceilings arrived on site already built, insulated and finished? That’s the idea behind CASE, our pre-fabricated hardwood cassette that combines structure, insulation and finished lining in a single panel, delivered ready to be installed.

This year, we’re the Category Partner for Residential Class 1 – New Build at the Australian Timber Design Awards, through CASE.

Here’s a quick look at how CASE comes together, from our manufacturing floor to installation on our first project. CASE will be coming early-2027.

Award winners will be announced tonight. Follow along with Australian Timber Design Awards to see who takes home the category, and congratulations in advance to every finalist!

Three projects built with MASSLAM have been shortlisted in Architecture & Design’s 2026 Sustainability Awards:

- CIT Woden (📷Adam McGrath & John Czechowski)
- Optus O Pavilion (📷Richard Glover)
- UTAS The Forest (📷Peter Bennetts & Jon Jarvela)

These same projects are also shortlisted for the upcoming 2026 Australian Timber Design Awards, so it’s fantastic to see them recognised again.

A big congratulations to the design and construction teams who brought each of these buildings to life, and best of luck to all the finalists!

Great work from our Retail Centre team on these table tops for the Cowwarr Hotel!

Another MASSLAM project has been shortlisted in the Australian Certified Timber category at this year’s Australian Timber Design Awards.

Designed by Gray Puksand for CIT, this Canberra education precinct was the largest mass timber building by volume in Australia at the time of its construction. Its exposed structure is built on MASSLAM beams and columns, and every piece of structural timber in the building is Australian Certified, supplied by ASH
Using mass timber also halved the building’s structural embodied carbon and took seven weeks off construction.

Congratulations to everyone who brought this project to life. Fingers crossed for the winners announcement!

Ever wondered what it's like to build with mass timber? The University of Tasmania has released a new video exploring how timber is shaping commercial construction in Tasmania, and The Forestry Building at UTAS features in it. The building uses our MASSLAM, so it's great to see it on screen. Mass timber is showing what's possible in larger buildings: warm, natural spaces that are prefabricated for efficient installation and that store carbon too. Around half the dry weight of timber is carbon locked away for the life of the building. Watch the full video here 👇

A third MASSLAM project has made the shortlist for the Australian Timber Design Awards. This time it's the Optus O Pavilion in Macquarie Park, in the Commercial Building category.

Thirty-four MASSLAM beams curve across its roof, following the shape of the land and creating a warm, welcoming entry to the Optus Campus. It's wonderful to see our timber at the heart of such a thoughtful building.

Congratulations to everyone involved!

Not far from ASH is The Cowwarr Hotel, which has been newly renovated. It’s looking better than ever with our Australian Oak used throughout. You'll find it lining the back of the bar, on the tabletops, in the bench seating across the restaurant, and in the battens out in the b**r garden.

It's great to see locally made timber products helping breathe new life into a local pub! Next time you're in the area, pop in to have a look, grab a meal and a drink, and help keep your local going strong!
