Rigging out some large dead sections on a Ribbon gum recently before they came down onto the garden.
Whilst the Wisteria growing over the lower section of the trunk here was not responsible for the die back, it's worth noting that vines & ivy etc. in similar situations can obscure what would otherwise be visually obvious structural defects.

Climbing exotics can be a wonderful addition or feature within the garden, however when interwoven within a canopy they will generally cause problems in the long run.

We recommend removal & maintenance from at least the upper canopy & inspection of hidden branch unions for defect.

With the recent dry spell into spring, followed by a much needed storm season, we are seeing outbreaks of fungal and associated disease in conifers across the New England. Cypress canker and fungal leaf wilt are evident in many plantings with symptoms presenting as a yellowing of leaves and/or dieback. More often than not we find associated infestations of cypress bark weevil taking advantage of trees under stress and causing further decline.

We currently have several sites we are monitoring after implementation of control measures and a management plan with encouraging results. Treatments are administered as direct stem injections as a curative and preventative.

It could be that majestic old macrocarpa as old as the original house, an established windbreak keeping those cold southerly's off the garden or a newer boundary planting as shelter for stock..
