Not only is rotten timber a terrible look, it is also very dangerous. Rot in structural components can lead to very serious damage. It’s much better to replace a couple of rotten posts than an entire pergola!
Rot is most commonly found where timber has been cut, or drilled through, and not been resealed properly. Think places like post shoes, roof purlins, notched beams, or intersecting timbers.
It can be hard to spot rot in painted timber, but looking for bubbled paint can be a dead give away.

Gutters are great for catching rainfall. Unfortunately they are also great at catching organic matter, which if not cleaned out frequently, can build up and lead to blockages.
