This old pepper tree has stood guard over this front yard for decades, burls and all. The brief for the new picket fence was simple: bring the street frontage back to life, and leave the tree exactly as it is.

So the string line went up, and the pickets are going in one at a time, worked by hand around those roots. Gothic tops, fresh pine, and every picket checked against the line before the nail goes in.

And every so often, Ben and I cross the road and look back at it the way the neighbours will. A fence like this is seen from the street every single day, so that's where it has to look right.

There's still a stretch to go, but it's already starting to look like the fence and the tree have always belonged together. 🌿

A bedroom is the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see at night. So we don't treat it as "just another room."

On this home, every bedroom got its own thinking. The main suite opens straight onto the balcony, with corner windows that pull in the treetops and brushed brass wall lights that glow at dusk. The guest rooms are calm and simple, with good light, soft carpet and nothing fighting for attention. The study doubles as a spare room thanks to floor-to-ceiling built-in shelving and drawers. And the kids' room? A hand-finished ombré sky wall, a full window seat with storage underneath, and a view of the trees that we hope never gets old.

Good bedrooms aren't about square metres. They're about light, storage and the small details you notice every day.

30 June → today.

Three months ago this was steel stumps, timber bearers and a whole lot of winter grass. Same trees, same sun, but no walls to catch it yet.

Now those same gums are framed through the clerestory windows, and the light that used to fall on bare ground is pouring across a living room.

Getting here took careful setout and a crew who backed themselves on a tricky site. Every one of those stumps had to be spot on for the house above it to work.

Between the huge amount of work going on in Brisbane for the Olympic stadium, bricks being nicked from sites, and people charging crazy prices on Marketplace, getting hold of bricks right now is a whole job in itself.
Juggling that with clients, timelines and budgets is a lot of pressure.

A house within a house.

This feature wall follows the line of the stair, then rises into a gable, so the shape of a home sits right in the middle of the living space. The raw OSB brings warmth and texture against the freshly set plasterboard, and the recessed niche is already wired and waiting for what comes next.

It's one of those details that started as a sketch and a conversation, and now we can stand in front of it. Ben and the team have taken real care with every edge and return, because on a surface like this, nothing hides.

The soffits are lined, and those shadow-line joints were set out before a single sheet went up so every line runs true from the gable to the far edge. The light cut-outs are in and the cables are waiting for the sparky's fit-off.

Below that, the wall wrap is on and the battens are going up. They create a ventilated cavity behind the cladding, so any moisture that gets in has somewhere to drain and the air can move. It's a small detail that makes a big difference to how this home performs and lasts.

Next up: cladding. This is where it starts to look like the drawings. 🖤

When your site looks like this, it's easy to think you're on a weekend retreat. ☁️🌿

Blue skies, a few lazy clouds drifting over the gums, the bottlebrush in full bloom and a view that rolls all the way down the valley. Up top, the roof sheets are on and catching the light (still in their protective film, which makes them almost cloud-white for now).

Fresh sheets, beautiful surroundings and a view to wake up to... sounds like a retreat to us. The only difference is that this one comes with scaffolding, a crew who've worked hard for it, and a home taking shape that the owners will get to enjoy every day. 🏡

Polka dots everywhere. 🤍

The plasterboard is on, and every one of those white spots is a screw head that's been set and coated, ready for flushing. It looks chaotic right now, but this is the stage where the house really starts to feel like a home.

The raking ceilings, that gable wall of glass, the stair void: you can finally read the spaces the way they were designed. Light bounces differently. Rooms have edges. Up until now it's been framing and insulation and imagination.

Next up, the flushers work their magic and the dots disappear under smooth, seamless walls. Then paint. Then it all starts to get very real.
