Did you know that hibiscus grown from seed are basically playing the genetic lottery?
Look closely at these two flowers. Believe it or not, they came from the exact same seed pod!
Unlike many garden veggies that grow "true to seed", tropical hibiscus have incredibly complex genetics. They have multiple sets of chromosomes (a condition called polyploidy), which means every single seed in a pod contains a completely unique, randomized mix of traits from its parents and ancestors.
Just like human siblings, you share the same parents, but you don't look exactly alike!
Because of this genetic scramble, every hibiscus seed you plant is technically a brand-new, never-before-seen variety. If you ever want an exact copy of a specific hibiscus flower, you have to propagate it from a cutting, not a seed!
