⚡ Why this Palm Beach tenant was getting electric shocks from the range hood
Tiffany reached out to INEX Electrical about her Palm Beach investment property after her tenant reported getting shocks whenever they touched the metal range hood. On arrival, we tested the unit and found a full 240V sitting on the metal enclosure – meaning the entire outside of the range hood was live and extremely dangerous.
We immediately disconnected and removed the range hood. Once it was down, we found the cause: one of the mounting screws had been driven straight through the flex cable, letting the active conductor energise the metal body. On top of that, the range hood was not AS3000 compliant – it had a metal enclosure with no earthing system, which is why the fault stayed there instead of tripping protection.
If you ever feel a tingle, zap, or anything unusual from an appliance – especially metal ones like range hoods, ovens or dishwashers – stop using it straight away and get it checked by a licensed electrician. For landlords and property owners, it’s a good idea to have older installations inspected to make sure they’re correctly earthed and compliant.
