Haven't found it somewhere like this before! Looks like someone's stuck asbestos sheeting to the underside of a concrete slab at a Gold Coast unit. See the groove between the sheets? That's a classic giveaway.

Coastal Asbestos Removal completed an asbestos ceiling removal in a Surfers Paradise bathroom on the Gold Coast, taking the old ceiling sheets down and leaving the timber battens exposed, ready for a new ceiling.

Could my bathroom ceiling contain asbestos? Many Gold Coast homes and units built before 1990 have fibre cement ceiling sheets in bathrooms and laundries that may contain asbestos. You can't tell by looking, so have a sample tested by a NATA-accredited lab before you drill, cut or replace them.

Is it safe to pull a ceiling down myself? It's not worth the risk. Breaking or cutting the sheets can release fibres. Our Queensland Class B licensed team removes them under controlled conditions, then wraps and seals them and takes them away ourselves under our asbestos transport licence for disposal at a licensed facility.

Three different wall sheets in one toilet wall, and only one of them was asbestos 🚽

When we pulled the linings out of this toilet, which backs onto a bathroom, Jason found what was left of past renovations. The top section was plasterboard, one sheet tested positive for asbestos, and the sheet next to it was newer fibro with a barcode printed on the back (a sign it's modern, asbestos-free sheeting).

Corners get cut during renovations, and asbestos can end up hidden anywhere in a home built before 1990. If you're planning a bathroom or toilet renovation, test the wall sheets before demolition starts.

Coastal Asbestos Removal completed an asbestos eaves removal in Mermaid Waters on the Gold Coast, taking the old eaves sheets and the covered patio lining out and leaving the timber rafters exposed, ready for new lining.
Could my eaves contain asbestos? Many Gold Coast homes built before 1990 have fibre cement eaves linings that may contain asbestos. You can't tell by looking, so have a sample tested by a NATA-accredited lab before you drill, cut or replace them.
Can I pull old eaves sheets down myself? It's not worth the risk. Breaking, cutting or drilling them can release fibres. "It's only Villaboard, there's no asbestos in it." We hear this all the time, and it's not always true ❌

On this job, the wall sheet is clearly stamped VILLABOARD, and it came back positive for asbestos when it was tested at a NATA-accredited laboratory. Older fibre cement sheets can contain asbestos whatever the brand name says, so a brand stamp is not proof that a sheet is safe.

The only way to know is to have a sample tested before you cut, drill or remove it.

Coastal Asbestos Removal is a Queensland Class B licensed asbestos removalist and licensed asbestos transporter on the Gold Coast. We can arrange testing and remove positive sheets safely.

Coastal Asbestos Removal completed an asbestos floor removal in Arundel on the Gold Coast, lifting the old floor covering and taking the slab back to clean, bare concrete, ready for new flooring.
Could my old floor contain asbestos? Vinyl sheet flooring, vinyl tiles and some black adhesives laid before 1990 can contain asbestos, and they're often hidden under carpet or newer floating floors. You can't tell by looking, so have a sample tested by a NATA-accredited lab before you pull it up.
Is it safe to rip up old lino yourself? Not if it contains asbestos. Scraping, sanding or breaking it can release fibres. Our Queensland Class B licensed team removes it under controlled conditions, then wraps and seals it and takes it away ourselves under our asbestos transport licence for disposal at a licensed facility.

Where did Jason find asbestos today? Right above his head ☝️

On this Gold Coast job, someone had extended the house and built straight over the old asbestos cement roof, leaving the corrugated sheets sealed inside the new ceiling space. The new owners had no idea it was there.

If you're buying or renovating an older home, especially one that's been extended, check the ceiling space before you start work. An old roof line can be hiding where you'd least expect it.

Coastal Asbestos Removal is a Queensland Class B licensed asbestos removalist and licensed asbestos transporter. We removed this roof for the new owners and took it away with us.

Coastal Asbestos Removal removed the asbestos from two bathrooms in a home in Shailer Park, Logan, taking the walls back to the timber frame and the floors back to the base, ready for the renovation.
Does my old bathroom have asbestos? Many homes built before 1990 used fibro (asbestos cement) sheeting behind bathroom and laundry tiles, and some older floor tiles and adhesives contain it too. You can't tell by looking, so get it tested before you start pulling tiles off.
Is it safe to strip an old bathroom yourself? Not if it contains asbestos. Smashing tiles or breaking the sheets can release fibres. Our Queensland Class B licensed team keeps the material damp and removes it carefully, then wraps and seals it and takes it away ourselves under our asbestos transport licence for disposal at a licensed facility.

Is your asbestos roof hazardous? 🏠

Many corrugated asbestos cement roofs in Queensland are now 40+ years old. Signs that one is breaking down include a rough, weathered surface, heavy lichen or moss growth, and cracked or broken sheets, like the roof in this drone footage.

Don't pressure wash, sand or walk on an old asbestos roof. If yours is showing its age, get it inspected and talk to a licensed removalist about your options.

Coastal Asbestos Removal is a Queensland Class B licensed asbestos removalist and licensed asbestos transporter on the Gold Coast. Asbestos roof removal is one of our most common jobs.
