⚠️COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT TERMITES!

Many homeowners underestimate the risk of termites or believe common myths that can leave their property vulnerable. Here are some of the most common misconceptions we have come across over the years:

🔘"I have a steel-framed home, so I don't need termite inspections or protection."

False. It is a common misconception that steel-framed homes are not at risk. While termites cannot damage the steel frame itself, they can still attack and damage other cellulose-based materials within the property, including timber roof battens, skirting boards, door frames, window frames, cabinetry, flooring, architraves, plasterboard, cardboard, stored items, and other timber components.

🔘“I have a physical Termite Barrier installed at the time of construction, so I don’t need any further Termite Protection”

Most of the time, false. Physical termite barriers are primarily used to help prevent concealed termite entry into a building by forcing termites into visible inspection zones where their activity can be detected before they enter the building. It does not prevent Termites from entering your home completely.

🔘"I have a chemical barrier, so I don't need inspections."

False. No termite management system is guaranteed to prevent termite attacks indefinitely. Chemically Treated zones degrade over time and can be compromised by landscaping, plumbing works, soil movement, construction or even your dog's digging in the treated soil. Regular inspections remain essential and are generally required to uphold any warranty.

🔘"I have a termite baiting system, so I'm completely protected."

False. Baiting systems significantly reduce the risk of termite attacks but they require regular inspections and maintenance to remain effective.

🔘"I'll know if I have termites."

False. Termites are often referred to as the "silent destroyers" because they typically remain hidden, long before there are any visible signs of their presence. This is why it is essential to have your property inspected by a licensed termite inspector, annually. Trained professionals know what subtle signs to look for, can identify termite activity that is not obvious to the untrained eye, and can detect conditions that may increase the risk of a termite attack before significant damage occurs.

🔘"My home insurance will cover any termite damage."

In most cases, false. Most Australian home insurance policies exclude termite damage because it is generally considered preventable through routine inspections and maintenance. Homeowners are usually responsible for repair costs which can sometimes be in the 10’s or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

🔘"If my neighbour has termites, I will too."

Not necessarily. However, if termites are active in your neighbourhood, your property is at an increased risk as some species of Termites are capable of foraging 80 to 100m or more from their nests. Regular inspections are strongly recommended in this instance.

🔘“If the Termites are eating my fence, they aren’t in my house”

False. Termites are constantly foraging for food and can be feeding in multiple locations simultaneously.

🔘"Removing a termite nest eliminates the risk."

False. A termite colony may have multiple nests, satellite colonies, or there may also be an entirely different colony nearby. Eliminating one nest does not mean termites are no longer present in the area. This is why Termite Protection on your home, is almost always recommended, especially in High-Risk areas.

🔘"DIY termite treatments are just as effective."

False. Successful termite management requires specialised knowledge, professional-grade products and equipment, and compliance with Australian Standards. DIY treatments often fail to eliminate the colony and can make future treatment more difficult.

🔘"Termites are only a problem in summer."

False. In Queensland, termites remain active throughout the year. While swarming is more common during warmer months, termite colonies continue to forage and feed year-round.

Yesterday, Jason and Tayla attended a termite conference/seminar as part of our ongoing professional development, strengthening our commitment to staying current with the latest research and best practices in termite management.

The session focused on advancing our understanding of termite biology, foraging behaviour, and contemporary treatment methods, with a strong emphasis on how new scientific findings are shaping more effective and targeted control strategies in the field.

A key part of the experience was the opportunity to hear directly from leading experts, including Dr Theo Evans from the University of Western Australia and Dr Johnalyn Gordon from the University of Florida. Their presentations highlighted recent developments in termite ecology and behaviour, as well as how the change in climate is affecting Termite activity.

Events like this play an important role in ensuring our knowledge remains current and evidence-based. By engaging directly with researchers at the forefront of termite science, we are better equipped to refine our practices, adopt improved treatment techniques, and provide more effective, informed solutions in the field.

‼️ATTENTION‼️

We’d like to inform our clients and community that changes are coming to the way rodent baiting services are carried out across Australia.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has introduced new regulations surrounding the use of Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs).

As part of these updated regulations, pest management professionals will be required to follow stricter guidelines around when, where, and how these products can be used.

These changes are designed to protect Australia’s native wildlife while still ensuring effective rodent control for homes and businesses.

We are currently reviewing the new guidelines and updating our procedures to ensure we remain fully compliant while continuing to deliver safe and effective pest management solutions.

Stay tuned as we’ll be sharing more updates soon about how these changes will be reflected in how we provide rodent management services, moving forward.

If you have any questions in the meantime, feel free to reach out.
