Navigating the Home Building Process: From Planning to Reality in Geelong

When embarking on the exciting journey of building a new home, many people envision themselves walking the construction site, watching their dream house take shape. However, what surprises most is that a significant chunk of time is spent in the administrative phases before the first brick is laid.....

When a new client sits down with us for the first time, I don't come in with a fixed idea of what their home should look like. The first questions are always the same: what's the vision here, and what are we trying to achieve?

From there, we listen. Sometimes a client will say they want a mid century minimalist home, sometimes it's not fixed at all and we build the picture together as we talk. I'm not interested in locking someone into a label before we've even discussed how they want to live. Instead, we pick up on the ideas that come through in conversation and let the design flow from there.

Interestingly, it usually still lands somewhere recognisable in the end. Around Highton, where a lot of our current work is happening, you'll see plenty of modern homes with touches from a few different styles blended together. That's not an accident. It's what happens when the design responds to the client rather than the other way around.

This is one of the reasons we describe ourselves as a custom home builder rather than a project home builder. Every home starts as a conversation, not a template. It takes longer than picking a plan off a shelf, but the result actually reflects the people who are going to live there.

The Cheapest Builder Quote Is Rarely the Best Deal

I want to talk about one of the most expensive mistakes people make when building a custom new home: choosing a builder based on the lowest quote.I understand why it happens. You've got three quotes in front of you and one is $80,000 cheaper than the other two. It feels like a win. But more often th...

I've got an engineering background, and if I'm honest, I've always looked forward to a new challenge rather than away from one. There's real satisfaction in working through a difficult site or a tricky design problem and coming out the other side with a home the client loves.

As an affordable custom home builder, one of the things we take the most pride in is finding creative solutions that still fit within a client's budget. That's not always easy, especially on a difficult block, but it's where we do our best work.

Steep sites are a good example. There's a common assumption that building on a sloping block means compromising on design, or that the finished home won't look as modern or as considered as something on a flat, easy site. We don't accept that. We take real pride in delivering a well designed, good looking home on a steep site, without blowing out the budget to get there.

That's really the philosophy behind everything we do. A challenging site shouldn't mean a lesser home or a bigger bill. It should mean working a bit harder at the design and planning stage so the client still gets what they came to us for in the first place, a home that suits their life and their budget.

If you've got a difficult block and you've been told it can't be done affordably, we'd love the chance to prove otherwise.
