Weekly Turf Tip:

What are the Benefits of Regular Mowing?

Keeping your lawn at the same height throughout helps even out nutrients which ensures it has a uniform look. Also, waiting too long between mows stops the sun from getting into the undergrowth which may result in your grass dying from below. When your lawn is too tall, it may be difficult for the mower to cut even if you increase the blade height. This will make mowing your lawn that much harder. Also, if your grass isn’t mowed frequently it will not be as healthy as a regularly mowed one. Finally, if your lawn is weak, it has more chance of being affected by diseases, pests and weeds.

Turf of the Week:
Palmetto® Buffalo

"Outstanding Heat Tolerance"

Hailing from central Florida, Palmetto® Buffalo has a coarse texture with dark green leaves. This variety has outstanding heat tolerance in high and low humidity climates. It also possesses reasonable cold tolerance and handles frosts well. Furthermore, this all-rounder handles shade and salinity well. Having a deep root system, Palmetto® Buffalo has medium wear tolerance with new runners assisting in recovery. However, we do not recommend this variety for high traffic areas.

* Dark green leaves
* Great in hotter climates
* Handles frosts we
* Fairly good wear tolerance

Turf Tip: How much should I water during dry spells?

The amount of water your new lawn needs is dependent on the climate, soil, type of turf and its general health. During a period of low rainfall, give your lawn a deep watering a few times a week and a top up lighter watering during a particularly long dry spell. The best time to water is early morning or evening. Try to avoid the hottest parts of the day as this will help minimise water loss due to evaporation.

Turf of the Week: Empire Zoysia™

"Good with Foot Traffic"

Empire Zoysia™ is a slightly coarse grass which we recommend for domestic and commercial lawns as well as recreational areas. This variety has good shade tolerance and handles a reasonable amount of traffic. It also keeps its colour well in winter but does seed a lot in summer if not mown for a number of weeks. That said, Empire Zoysia™ does grow slower than some other Zoysia grasses and may require less maintenance than Blue and Green Couches. It is important to use sharp mower blades as leaves may otherwise tear or be damaged. We highly recommend Empire Zoysia™ for roadsides, domestic lawns, communal areas, golf course tee-offs, parks as well as schools and unit complexes

* Good shade tolerance
* Recommended for domestic & commercial uses
* Summer-seeding
* Slower growing grass

Weekly Turf Tip:

The pH level of soil is a key factor in the health of your lawn. If soil is too acidic or too alkaline, your grass will not absorb nutrients or grow verdantly. pH is measured on a scale of 0-14 with a pH of 7 being neutral, 0-7 acidic and 7-14 alkaline. pH for your lawn should ideally be 6.5. You can purchase a simple and inexpensive pH testing kit from your local nursery or garden shop.

My Soil is too Acidic - How do I Raise my pH levels?

Lime is a common method of raising soil pH and decreasing acidity but always read the directions on the packet. Another alternative is using wood ash as an organic option to raise pH over the long-term.

My Soil is too Alkaline – How do I Lower my pH Levels?

There are a number of options for decreasing the pH of your soil to support a healthy lawn. Firstly, Sulfur is the easiest method as its cheap and safe. An organic solution is to use Sphagnum Peat which has the added benefit of adding organic matter to your soil and increases water retention. Acidifying fertilizer containing ammonia or urea can also have an acidifying effect over time. Finally, mulches and compost tend to make soil more acidic as they break down and regular use will bring the soil pH closer to the desired neutral to slightly acidic level over time.

Turf of the Week: Sir Walter Buffalo

This variety has a coarse texture and retains its colour during Australian winters. Sir Walter Buffalo prefers temperatures between 20°C and 30°C and is great in high-humidity areas. Being a quick growing grass, this variety needs regular mowing to maintain control.

- Great in humid temperatures
- Requires regular mowing
- Good shade tolerance
