Extreme Heat Warning - Using AC Systems.
Refrigerated AC units — best in extreme heat
This is the most reliable option when temps are brutal (especially over 38–40°C).
Best way to run it:
• Start early: Turn it on in the morning before the house heats up.
• Set a realistic temp:
• 24–26°C is ideal.
• Don’t crank it way down—it won’t cool faster, it’ll just stress the system.
• Run it continuously during peak heat rather than cycling on/off.
• Close windows and doors tightly.
• Use ceiling or normal fans to help circulate air → lets you set the thermostat a bit higher.
• Block heat gain:
• Close blinds/curtains on sun-facing windows.
• Avoid ovens, dryers, and heat-producing appliances midday.
If your unit is struggling, raising the set temp by even 1–2 degrees can prevent shutdowns.

💧 Evaporative Coolers — limited in extreme heat
These work best in dry air and below 35–40 degrees. In extreme heat, they often can’t keep up.
If you’re using one anyway:
• Open windows slightly (10 to 15cm’s) to allow airflow—this is required.
• Run it on high fan + pump during peak heat.
• Use it early in the day, then reassess in the afternoon.
• Keep pads clean and fully wet.
• Turn it off if indoor humidity climbs (sticky + warm = dangerous).
⚠️ If outdoor temps are extreme and humidity rises, Evap coolers can actually make you feel worse.
🛑 Safety notes (important)
• If indoor temps hit 32 degrees, prioritise refrigerated AC, cooling centers, or leaving the space.
• Check on pets, kids, and older adults often.
• Drink water even if you don’t feel thirsty.
