Solar Battery 🔋 ⚡️
In order to make the energy that people collect from solar panels available when the sun no longer shines (ie at night time or during heavy rain and cloud or as back-up power in the event of blackouts) a solar battery is needed. A great battery for your home’s solar panel system is fundamental if you want to achieve full off grid living, saving your money as well as lowering your carbon footprint, and sparing what's left of some of the planet’s resources.
Over the last decade a surge in lithium-ion battery production has led to an 85% decline in prices, making energy storage commercially viable for the first time in history.
Some people's motivation for Solar is environmental, or financial or both. Let's look at each individually.
The more solar power you use in your home, the less energy made from fossil fuels that you’ll have to buy back from the grid. And if your goal is to become more energy independent, you’ll want to maximise your use of your own energy so you can minimise the amount you need to buy back from your power company.
As mentioned, when you install solar panels, your system will generate electricity when the sun is shining. This electricity will be used to power your home at that point in time, and excess solar power you’re not using will be exported to the grid or lost if you're not connected.
There’s one thing no one tells you though: while you will be paid a feed-in tariff for the excess solar electricity you export, it’s likely to be up to three times less than the rate you buy electricity for. So financially it makes more sense to use as much free solar power in your home as possible rather than exporting it for a relatively low price.
Currently the top of the range batteries are the Tesla battery. A handful of Zaher Architects projects around the Byron Shire have installed them as part of a larger off grid, yet luxury living strategy, and another handful currently being constructed.
As more people adopt this technology and the more patents expire, the prices will go down and become normalised. We are excited to see this shift.
