🌶️ GAWLER RIVER CHILLIES

When to Plant Chillies on the Adelaide Plains South Australia

Soil temperature is the key.

🌡️ The Golden Rule

Aim to plant chilli seedlings outdoors when the soil temperature is consistently:

18°C – 21°C

If the soil is below 16°C, chilli plants can struggle to establish. They may stop growing (“sulk”) and become more vulnerable to root problems, pests and disease.

🌱 1. Planting Chilli Seedlings Outdoors

Best soil temperature:

18°C plus

📅 Gawler River Chillies timing:

Late October – early November

This is generally when the soil around the Adelaide Plains begins reaching the temperatures chilli plants need.

🌙 Watch the overnight temperature

Don’t just look at the daytime temperature.

Ideally, overnight temperatures should be consistently above 16C before planting out.

🍑 The “bare bottom test”

A simple old-fashioned test:

If the soil is too cold to comfortably sit on with your bare bottom, it’s probably too cold for chillies!

Warm-season crops such as chillies and tomatoes don’t like cold soil.

🌶️ 2. Starting Chilli Seeds

For Gawler River Chillies, starting seeds early gives plants a much longer growing season.

⭐ Recommended method: Indoor seed raising

Soil temperature: 22°C – 28°C
Best time: August – September

Using a heat mat can help maintain the warm temperatures chilli seeds need for reliable germination.

Starting early means your plants can be well established and ready to go into the garden when the Gawler River soil warms up.

This is particularly useful for super-hot varieties such as:

🌶️ Carolina Reaper
🌶️ Ghost
🌶️ Scorpion
🌶️ 7 Pot
🌶️ Primotalii

These varieties can take a long time to mature and benefit greatly from an early start.

🌱 3. Sowing Seeds Directly Into the Garden

Soil temperature:

22°C – 35°C

📅 Gawler River timing:

Late November – December

Direct sowing is generally not the best option for chilli growing on the Adelaide Plains.

By waiting until the soil is warm enough, you’ve already lost valuable growing time.

This can result in:

❌ Smaller plants
❌ Later flowering
❌ Later fruit production
❌ Late harvests
❌ Super-hot chillies not fully ripening before the cooler weather arrives

📊 Gawler River Chillies Planting Guide

Method Soil Temperature Gawler River Timing Recommendation
🌱 Indoor seed trays + heat mat 22–28°C August–September ⭐ Best method
🌿 Transplant seedlings outdoors 18–21°C Late October–early November ⭐ Excellent
🌶️ Direct sowing outdoors 22–35°C Late November–December Not recommended

☀️ Want to Plant Earlier?

If you’re keen to get your Gawler River Chillies into the garden earlier in October, you can help warm the soil.

Try these methods:

🖤 Black plastic mulch / dark w**d mat

Cover the garden bed for several weeks before planting. Dark materials absorb sunlight and help warm the soil.

🪴 Pots and raised beds

Pots and raised garden beds generally warm up faster than the surrounding ground soil during spring.

☀️ Choose a sunny position

Give your chillies as much sunlight as possible. A warm, sheltered position will help plants get established quickly.

🌶️ Gawler River Chillies — Simple Rule

SEED → AUGUST/SEPTEMBER

Start seeds indoors with warmth.

PLANT → LATE OCTOBER/EARLY NOVEMBER

Wait until the soil reaches 18–21°C and nights are staying above 15°C.

HARVEST → SUMMER/AUTUMN

The earlier you get healthy, established plants growing, the better your chances of getting a great crop of fully ripe chillies.

🔥 Remember

Don’t plant chillies just because Spring has arrived.

For Gawler River Chillies, warm soil = happy chilli plants.

🌶️ Wait for the warmth — then bring on the heat! 🔥

🔥🌍 FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON’T KNOW… WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL THIS TIME?! 🌍🔥

We are only DAYS away from one of the BIGGEST League of Fire showdowns of the entire year! 🌶️🏆
