Every tool in this ute has a story, and most of them aren't glamorous. Some I bought when I could barely afford to. Some have been replaced three times over because I wore the last one out. A couple are older than some of the blokes on my crew.

I look at this photo and I don't just see a ute and a kit, I see every early morning, every job that didn't go to plan, every year I wasn't sure this business would actually make it, and every one where it did anyway.

It's easy to look at a tradie leaning on his ute and think that's just the job. For me it's more than that, it's proof I built something out of nothing but stubbornness and a belief that plumbing could be done properly, by people who actually give a damn.

If your hot water's been running hot and cold, taking longer to heat up, or just feels like it's on its way out, now's a much better time to sort it than the morning it finally gives up completely.

I carry the common parts on the van and can often get a system replaced the same day, so if yours needs sorting, it doesn't have to turn into days without hot water while you wait around.

Been meaning to introduce you to Kath for a while now, because half the reason this business runs smoothly is her, not me.

She's the one who answers the phone when someone's dealing with a busted hot water system before school pickup, gets the job booked in, keeps me and the boys on schedule, and somehow remembers details about clients that I've completely forgotten by the time I'm back in the ute.

I get to go do the jobs and take the credit for a business that runs on time, but a fair chunk of that's down to Kath keeping the wheels turning behind the scenes.

Most people assume a hot water system just lasts as long as it lasts, and whatever happens, happens.
But the truth is, the ones that make it to fifteen years and the ones that need replacing at eight, aren't down to bad luck. It usually comes down to three fairly simple things...

1. Water quality,
2. How the system's actually being used, and
3. Whether it's had a proper check along the way.

That last one's the easiest to control, and it's the one most homeowners skip entirely simply because nobody's ever told them it matters.
