Watermelon Radish 💗💚
Exceptional flavour, not as fierce in it’s bite as other radishes. Fast and easy growing. Always a goodie to find space for in the garden ###

I think this is my favourite bed in the patch at the moment. I’ve packed a lot in it- Radishes, lettuces, carrots, kohlrabi, coriander and violas. So far everything is growing happily and doing their thang. Pests been suspiciously nonexistent. ###

YACON HARVEST 🌻

Native to Colombia and Ecuador a hardy perennial that can yield large harvests of tubers. Known as a ground apple, with a sweet crunchy crispness- a cross between apple and watermelon, with overtones of sugarcane. A member of the sunflower family and can grow to 2 metres in height with small, daisy-like yellow flowers. After flowering the top growth withers and dies back then tubers can then be harvested. The tubers sweeten as the plant dies off so even though you can ‘bandicoot’ early tubers, the main harvest should really take place once all the top growth has died off. Dig carefully to avoid damage to the tubers. Undamaged tubers can be stored in a cool, dark and dry place with good air circulation for some months. I’ve only ever tried yacon raw but rumours have it you can also juice, steam, bake or boil it xx

Today’s harvest- Mixed Asian Greens Bouquet ➡️
I prefer to harvest these leaf by leaf, not as a whole. This method works so well and keeps me in steady supply for ages! 💚xx

And this is the post that she jinxed herself .......
Interestingly, the slugs have been quiet thus far......

I have a theory:
I think it’s because this winter, I’ve turned into a cold hearted bitch with my soil. I’ve chosen not to keep it protected and cosy under delicious mulch over winter. It’s my boldest attempt to try control the annual slug plague. I got in early, beginning of Autumn before the inevitable plague usually hits and removed all the mulch off my beds. I composted the mulch and that compost will eventually be reapplied on beds come spring/summer.
To help the soil over winter, I have upped the anti with my interplanting, over planting and green manuring making sure all beds are full. This, I am hoping will be enough to maintain as much of the soils integrity as I can.
Anyone else do this technique? Did your soil forgive you? Did it help at all with the slugs? ###

Taking advantage of the recent storm we had by foraging for fallen sticks around the front of the property. That’s the next month (or two) sorted for kindling 🔥 🪵

Who else loves stuffing their head in lavender? I know I can’t be alone on this one. I see you....reaching out for that lavender plant as you pass it on the street 😉😗 ###

SLUG TIP- Sometimes you just have to admit defeat and coexist. Something that works a treat for me- recognise your problem beds or zones for slugs. Avoid planting greens in them if you can and plant things like onions, garlic, spring onions etc in those zones..... no more seedling loss and virtually zero damage and if so it’ll never be enough to affect the bulb below. Pictured here is the pomegranate bed/slug hotel. Last winter I lost soo many seedlings to this bed. It was a serious waste but this season I’ve followed my allium theory and it’s been a total success, no slug damage 🙌
