BUYING AN APPLIANCE? KEEP TWO DIFFERENT DETAILS

The Energy Rating Label helps compare energy efficiency and estimated energy use. Actual running costs depend on how you use the appliance and your electricity tariff.

For installation planning, also save the exact model number and manufacturer installation manual. Send those to your electrician before ordering so the electrical requirements can be assessed. The star label alone cannot tell you whether your existing circuit or switchboard is suitable.

Save the graphic with your appliance shortlist. It is easier than trying to remember which of six almost-identical model numbers you meant.

REPLACING DOWNLIGHTS? BRING A BRIEF, NOT A GUESS

Before buying replacements, list the rooms and number of lights, whether you use a dimmer, and the brightness and warm/cool appearance you want. Existing invoices or manuals can help identify the products.

Ask your electrician to confirm the fitting, driver and dimmer combination before you order. “Dimmable” on one product is not a promise that every combination will work together. Leave fittings and switch covers in place; you do not need to pull anything out to prepare a brief.

Save this checklist for your lighting upgrade. It is easier to describe the room first than discover the wrong fittings after the box arrives.

JOB FINISHED? KEEP YOUR ELECTRICAL HANDOVER TOGETHER

Whether you have had new lights, a ceiling fan or a home charger installed, save three things in one folder:

1. The accepted quote, invoice and installation documents provided.
2. Product model details, manuals and warranty terms.
3. Your installer’s and the manufacturer’s support contacts.

At handover, ask who to contact first if you need help, and have the normal controls explained. Keep account passwords and private household details out of public posts.

A folder called “electrical” is easier to find than “that thing somewhere in my emails”. Save this checklist for your next job.

PLAN YOUR COOLING BEFORE THE HOT DAYS ARRIVE

Start with three simple habits: close blinds against the hottest sun, try a fan for air movement over you, and close internal doors when using air conditioning so you cool the areas you need.

If a ceiling fan is on your wish list, note where you sit or sleep and discuss a suitable location and installation with your electrician. A fan should be useful where you spend time—not just look good in the middle of the ceiling.

Save the graphic as your warm-weather reminder.

kW AND kWh: THE EXTRA LETTER MATTERS

kW measures power: the rate at which energy is used or delivered. kWh measures an amount of energy over time. A steady 1 kW for one hour equals 1 kWh.

That helps when reading appliance specifications, battery capacity and EV charging figures. A charger’s kW rating is not the amount of energy your car receives in every session. Actual charging power can vary, and charging has losses.

Save the graphic for the next time you compare specifications. For practical home-charger guidance, our Sydney EV Charging Community is organised by Electrical3:

PLANNING AN EV CHARGER, NEW COOKTOP OR AIR CONDITIONING?

Give your electrician the whole list before assessing the first job. Include anything likely to follow: heat-pump hot water, solar or a home battery.

You do not need to buy everything at once. Put your plans in order, with likely timing and any product models already chosen. Ask what your existing supply and switchboard can support, what needs work now, and what should be allowed for later.

NSW's guidance recommends assessing current and planned future electrical needs. An upgrade is not something we can diagnose from a photo, and this is not a promise that every home needs one.

Save a simple NOW / LATER list for your next electrical visit.

CHOOSING NEW LIGHTS? SEPARATE OUTPUT FROM COLOUR.

Lumens describe how much light a lamp produces. Watts describe the electrical power it uses. Warm white, cool white and daylight describe the appearance of the light — a separate choice from light output.

Before comparing products, write down the room's purpose and the light colour you prefer, then compare the lumen ratings. Don't use wattage alone as a shortcut for brightness.

Save both details for your lighting discussion. Ask your electrician to confirm suitability for the fitting and any existing controls before ordering replacements.

SPARE SOCKETS AREN’T SPARE CAPACITY

A powerboard can have empty sockets and still be overloaded by the appliances connected to it. Never plug a powerboard into another powerboard.

CFA advises using powerboards only for low-powered appliances, with one appliance per outlet. Follow the appliance and powerboard instructions and rated limits.

Practical step: review what is connected together. If you rely on stacked adaptors or a chain of powerboards, ask a licensed electrician about suitable permanent outlets instead. Stop using damaged electrical equipment; don’t attempt repairs yourself.

COMPARE THE JOB, NOT JUST THE BOX

Two EV charger quotes can name the same charger and still cover different work. Before choosing, ask for these four things in writing:

• The exact charger and what is supplied and fitted.
• The cable route, circuit protection and any switchboard work included.
• Testing, commissioning, app setup and handover documents.
• The total including GST, exclusions and how any extra work would be agreed.

Want solar charging or load management? Ask which monitoring equipment and setup are included—“smart” alone does not tell you the scope.

Save this checklist for your next quote comparison.

YOUR SMOKE ALARM HAS A REPLACEMENT DATE, TOO

A fresh battery does not make an old alarm new. Fire and Rescue NSW advises replacing smoke alarms every 10 years, or earlier if the manufacturer specifies. That includes mains-powered alarms.

Check your records or a safely visible date label, and put the replacement date in your calendar. If the age is unknown, arrange a check. Do not disconnect a hardwired alarm or climb unsafely to reach it; hardwired replacement needs a licensed electrician.
