Switchboard Upgrade, Done Properly ⚡

This customer came to us after their electricity bills didn’t add up. When we opened the board, we found the problems - a damaged main switch due to loose wiring, incorrect wiring of production/consumption monitoring for their solar and battery system. Not only that, the additions to the existing switchboard were unsightly, unsafe and poorly executed.

We upgraded the switchboard and corrected the wiring and monitoring setup including new circuit protection incorporating safety switch/circuit breaker upgrades. The customer now gets live data that matches their retailer billing, with a safer, more efficient system behind it.

It’s a great example of why it always pays to use a licensed, experienced and knowledgeable electrician for solar, battery and switchboard work.

⚡ A glimpse into the history of power in the Snowy Monaro ⚡

Before smart meters, solar systems and modern switchboards, bringing electricity to a property looked very different.

This old Delco-Light battery instruction sheet is a reminder of a time when many rural homes, farms and sheds created and stored their own power.

A Delco Light battery refers to the heavy-duty glass-jar lead-acid cells used in historic Delco-Light power systems from the early to mid-20th century. These antique, 2-volt glass cells were wired in series to provide the 32-volt direct current (DC). These early systems used a small engine-driven generator to produce electricity. The power was then stored in large lead-acid batteries, similar in concept to today’s energy storage systems. The batteries supplied power when needed — allowing lights, appliances and equipment to operate even when the generator wasn’t running.

Maintaining these systems was a hands-on job. Battery levels had to be checked, water added, charging cycles managed and connections kept clean to ensure reliable operation. The instructions even show the importance of regular “equalising charges” to keep the battery banks healthy.

While the technology has changed dramatically, the principle remains the same — generate, store and use energy when it’s needed.
