I'm perpetually amazed at how quickly natives grow.

I wanted this path to lead you down to the garden and invite you to look around the corner. Doesn't it do just that?

Sometimes I miss my old garden and wonder how it's doing. Taken last August. An unassuming back corner of the yard that I quietly admired.

Left to right-ish: Ironbark, Poa Lab, Native Indigo, nodding saltbush growing vigorously over the chicken wire fence, callistemon, Hop bush.

And that's one year's growth since planting tubestock on last year.

Goodbye community garden plot 👋
It appears as though I left it how I found it; w**dy and neglected.

But if you scratch just beneath the surface you will see a healthier soil, teaming with life.
In amongst this jungle, there is still vegetables to be harvested: the odd carrot, fennel, self-sown lettuce, a myriad of herbs as well as Jerusalem Artichokes. What looks like disordered chaos is the beauty of mother nature and plants left to realise their full potential. Pictured is a leek flower about to burst open (I'd been waiting months for that), rocket dried and ready to go and silverbeet along the way.

I was required to reinstate the metre wide paths (I removed them to grow more food) and you can see in the final pic, the healthy wallaby grass coming through strongly now. I'm really happy with the germination. I gave it a quick hand w**d to give them a fighting chance against intruders. Just have to convince the gardeners there not to mow it, or at least not too often.

I deliberated back and forth about staying or going for a long time and it wasn't an easy decision to leave but in the end it feels like the heart made it. And the time to go is now. It will free up space and energy to dedicate to the next adventure.

Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Most of us have heard of eating seasonally, but what about drinking seasonally?

I've been making myself some fresh herbal teas from the garden with mixes that are in abundance at the moment. Pictured here is lemon balm, river mint and lavender.

Feeling a bit down at the moment but noticing how soothing the ritual of tea making has been for me.

I always feel better after this cleansing little combo. I'm no herbalist but lemon balm, lavender and mint are all medicinal plants that are said to help bring calm in one way or another.

When I lived in Germany, through the winter I would drink thyme and rosemary tea. I've also been known to drink raspberry leaf tea as well.

Is this something you do too? I'd love to hear your favourite combinations.

Zucchinis survived their first night out of the shelter of the green house. We're off to a good start!

The PVC pipe with copper tape helps keep the snails off and the cover helps keep the plants sheltered and protected.

5 plants will be enough for us to get sick of zucchinis while giving some away.

If you're new to growing food, I'd recommend zucchinis. They're pretty easy going as long as you protect them as seedlings until they get prickly and give them enough space to spread out.

We have now entered the 'BASIL GAP'- the period between using our last frozen basil block and harvest of this season's basil. It's gonna be a while 😭 but waiting for it builds anticipation and makes the first harvest all the more exciting.

Ps. Do baby basils look like butts to anyone else?

So inspiring and deeply moving when you stop to take it in.

'Stop to smell the roses' translates better for me as stop and look at the silverbeet!

Packed 60+ packets of seeds for today with my little one to share with the local community.

From my garden to yours, I hope these grow well for you.

Mostly carrots, but also some native plants (of course!) including Warrigal Greens and some Yam Daisy seeds (last picture) which feel really special to me to give away. Once abundant in the landscape, these are now critically endangered in the wild.

Although people love the colour purple in a vegetable, I can definitely recommend the 'All seasons' carrots as a very reliable and robust (and orange) carrot for your patch. This is the second time I've saved them so they are acclimatising nicely to the western plains.
