🎉 Excellent news about tiny homes on wheels, from New South Wales!

Shellharbour City Council’s 2 year pilot project for longer term renting is a go!

In Tasmania, Local Governments say they cannot create policies that conflict with State Government Legislation, so that’s why tiny home advocates are petitioning the State Government to create a clear & affordable pathway for living in tiny homes on wheels (medium to long term, on owned or leased land).

This article expresses the frustration experienced by many owners, wanna-be owners, potential land hosts & builders of tiny homes on wheels.

The 29 Tasmanian Councils often want to approve innovative housing, but they can be restricted by State Government Legislation.

The hope is that the Tasmanian Parliamentary petition will instigate change at the higher government level.

To reduce pressure & stress for Councils, to create affordable & simple pathways to compact homes, and to allow tiny home owners to contribute to Council expenses (roads, rubbish, street lights, community parks & play grounds, sports fields and more).

All this radio talk, newspaper articles, social media & even a Parliamentary Petition!

Are you confused about which ‘tiny homes’ are being referred to!?

✅ We mean tiny homes on wheels (THOWs), built to Federal Vehicle Standards for lightweight trailers & caravans (VSB1 Revision 6) (they can be registered if built to standards, towed on roads, and do not require someone to own land outright = more affordable)

❌ NOT modular small homes or converted shipping containers like below, that are craned onto permanent footings (these already have recognised compliance pathways, & require you to own land = less affordable for many).

❌ NOT imported, expandable homes, with or without wheels (the build quality of those can cause issues with Councils = more expense in the long run).

🌟Toowoomba Council, Queensland heeds calls to consider tiny houses on wheels 👏🏽

🗣️We’ve had a lot of people tell us Council’s policy that restricts tiny homes needs to change because we’re in a .

We’ve also heard the message that we’re out of step with other local governments.

So this week we voted unanimously to review the local laws that stop people living in tiny homes. Some people need the laws changed so they have a roof over their heads at a lower price or so they can be near family to care for them when they’re sick. Others are choosing to live in a minimalistic way. That’s their decision so how are we letting people have the choice?

It’s a surprisingly complex policy area and we need to make sure it’s done right but bottom line is we want people to be safe.

I’ve had a lot of conversations and meetings with people about this. Some have shared very personal stories of their lives.

🏡💡For those who don’t know what a tiny home is, this pic of Holly and her family will give you an idea. There are lots of different types - just like there are variations in larger homes - and they require approvals.

Officers working in compliance and planning are on the case and will report back to us in December.
