Ironbark Architecture Architectural home design in Cronulla, Sutherland Shire, Sydney, Australia. New homes, renovations a

In Australia, we live amongst one of the most fantastic climates and most impressive landscapes the world has to offer - connecting our architecture and our lives with both is an opportunity we should all take. The American architect Tom Kundig said 'People who build their own home are very courageous... these are people who are curious about life'... undertaking building a house will, at the same time, be one of the most challenging and one of the most rewarding things a person can do. Taking clients on this journey on which they will learn not only more about architecture, but about themselves and creating architecture that improves peoples lives one building at a time is what Ironbark Architecture + Design is all about.

Old + new. Do they really need to match?
Sometimes, respecting what’s already there means allowing something new to be different.
Swipe to see how we approached it.

Courtyards feature regularly in Ironbark designs.
They’re a powerful design tool that can help us bring light, air and nature deeper into the home.
We think of these spaces as another “room” in the house. Sometimes we design them so they can be used, and sometimes their main purpose is to be looked into rather than occupied, like at Beela, where the ginkgo tree and underplanting create a beautiful outlook from three different areas of the home.

We won! 🏆
Beela House has been named a 2026 Australian Good Design Award Winner in Built Environment — Architectural Design.
It’s a pretty special recognition for a project that embodies so much of what we care about at Ironbark — designing with climate, landscape and the way people live in mind.
Beela is a considered home, but one designed to feel generous, comfortable and deeply connected to the outdoors.

Very proud of this one.

Alcheringa was never about imposing a house on the landscape. It was about understanding what was already there — remnant bushland, sandstone, a creek line, an Aboriginal heritage site and an existing clearing — and allowing those conditions to shape what came next.

From early sketches through to construction, the project evolved through restraint, passive design, bushfire considerations and close collaboration between architect, owner-builder, consultants, fabricators and trades.

We’re proud that Alcheringa has been shortlisted for the 2026 AIA NSW Architecture Awards — EmAGN Project Award — a recognition of the care, problem-solving and many hands behind the finished home.

A window can be more than a view.

It can frame a tree, bring the landscape into the room, catch the changing light, or create a quiet connection with the place beyond.

Across our projects, we look for opportunities to make that connection feel natural, bringing the outside in and making the landscape part of everyday life.

A few views from inside our homes.

What if you didn’t need more space, just better space?

This home had the potential.
We just had to rethink how it connected to the backyard.

A new outdoor room, a stronger connection between inside and out, and materials that give the original brickwork a new life.

Good design is often about doing more with what you already have.

Your home shouldn’t have to fight the climate.

Passive design works with the sun, shade, breeze and landscape to create more comfortable homes naturally.

It’s about considering climate from the very beginning — so comfort, beauty and sustainability work together.

But views, breezes, winter sun and summer shade are carefully planned long before the house takes shape.

The goal? For everything to come together so naturally, it feels like it could never have been any other way.

What makes a kitchen actually good?

Is it the materials? The layout? The amount of storage? The natural light?
We think it’s how all of these things work together.
A kitchen can look beautiful and still not work particularly well.

Good design is often about the things you notice less — considered proportions, natural light, thoughtful storage and a connection to the rest of the home.

What matters most to you in a kitchen?
