"A Little Faith". We seldom design anything on our buildings arbitrarily. The features on this facade all have a purpose.
As this wall faces north north-west, here is where direct sunlight needs to be controlled. Although hard to tell from this dreary old photo shoot day, the window on the left is shaded with a top and western side slatted screen to exclude unwanted Summer afternoon solar gain. The window on the right is recessed and angled towards solar north so that midday Winter sun is perpendicular to the glass. This = optimal solar gain deep into the room. In this case the main building line provides the shade from the high-angle Summer sun.

"A Little Faith" is our appropriately named addition and energy-efficient retrofit of a former weatherboard church in old cold Ballarat. Despite this structure not being protected under a heritage overlay, 'knock down and rebuild' is not really our thing.
When you consider all the original energy and materials that went into constructing something in the first place, and especially if it has aesthetic and historical significance to a place, it makes sense to work with what you have.
We love the challenge that these projects present and the reult is always something unique and satisfying. Preserving original building forms while making them livable for the 21st Century is what we mean by Creating Future Heritage.

Passive solar design principles are THE best way to keep your home warm throughout Winter in cool temperate climates such as Victoria. It doesn't cost any more to design, it doesn't cost any more to build. There's no reason to be colder inside your home than outside!

"A Little Faith" is a great example of what can be done to improve thermal performance of an old building not really built to suit our cool-temperate climate zone.
The owners really wanted to invest in where they intended to live for the long term. While retaining the historical character of the original church structure was paramount, they were also keen to have a contrasting and more playful addition that could be built with passive-solar design principles.
The result is a visually and spatially cohesive coupling of the old with the new, to create a complete home containing nothing more and nothing less than what is needed to enjoy life comfortably through the extremes of out Central Victorian climate.

More of that good free heat entering your home throughout the day. Even if there are obstructions to the sun hitting the thermal mass floor, it doesn't eally matter. The sun will move across your floor throughout the day and is continuously storing heat energy into everything it hits.
Its also nice not to have to turn your lights on during the day, when you have correctly positioned and sized windows.

'Ember'. Our off-grid low-tech and hi-tech home 4km from the Ballarat C*D.
Using a mixture of energy sources to keep the home running year round with next to no operating costs.
The brickwork you see here for the chimney is actually double-skin, with a layer of insulation between. The result? Insulated interal thermal mass to absorb radiant heat from the wood-heater, AND the look of brick on the exterior.
