House Surveys General Manager, Jarvis and Graduate Surveyor, Ollie recently had the opportunity to visit the University of Otago and connect with Bachelor of Surveying students.

Ollie, who studied at Otago before joining House Surveys at the beginning of 2026, was joined by Jarvis to share insights into life at House Surveys, graduate opportunities and some of the projects the team has been working on.

It was a great opportunity to connect with the next generation of surveyors, share their experiences and give students a glimpse into what a career at House Surveys can look like.

The team made the most of their time in the region, swapping surveying conversations for some well-earned time on the slopes.

Out on site at Somerset Dam, our team recently completed a contour and detail survey to accurately map the site's topography and existing features.

Using the survey plans, the team identified the permanent survey mark before using high-precision GPS technology to verify its position and establish a reliable height datum for the site.

Before the first survey begins, our team comes together for a toolbox meeting — not just to discuss safety and the day's work, but to continue investing in our people.

This week's discussion focused on demonstrating self-awareness and how feedback and reflection can help us better understand our strengths, recognise areas for improvement and continue growing both personally and professionally.

Technical capability is essential in surveying, but so are the behaviours that help us communicate effectively, work as a team and keep learning throughout our careers.
