Snowy Hydro

Snowy Hydro This is the official page for the iconic Snowy Hydro Limited. The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme is part our nation's heritage.

From generation to wholesale and retail, Snowy Hydro is an Australian-owned end-to-end energy company that has been at the centre of Australian energy reliability since the development of the Snowy Scheme began more than 75 years ago.

Way to go, Flo! 💪
TBM Florence has made it more than 7km into her journey excavating Snowy 2.0’s headrace tunnel. Come and get a behind the scenes look at how she’s going!

Dam, that’s interesting! 🧐

Snowy has an impressive collection of dams, aqueducts and other waterways that all play a vital role in storing/diverting/utilising water.

Talbingo Reservoir is just one of those assets that has stood the test of time, and continues to play an important role today.

Here’s our man Tom to tell you all about it

The storage capacity in Snowy 2.0’s upper reservoir is the equivalent to 26 MILLION home batteries!! 🤯

You can’t overstate the importance of this project in providing reliability and stability to Australia’s electricity grid as we move towards more renewable generation.

TBM Lady Eileen Hudson’s breakthrough moment was a massive reminder of the scale and complexity of the project that will be, essentially, Australia’s biggest battery.

Come on, Eileen! 🎉🥳👏🙌

Snowy 2.0’s 6km tailrace tunnel has been completed thanks to a Herculean effort from TBM Lady Eileen Hudson.

This is a massive milestone that will connect Talbingo Reservoir to our massive power station caverns nearly 1km underground.

We are gaining some awesome momentum as we continue building, what will essentially be, Australia’s biggest battery 🔋

By ‘charging’ our battery with renewable energy when it is plentiful (pumping water uphill using that excess energy), we are enabling more renewable energy to enter the grid and take the place of coal fired power stations as they begin to retire.

TLDR: we are keeping your lights on using the power of gravity and water!

Did you know that Snowy 2.0 will be the equivalent of 26 MILLION home batteries!? Not only that, it’s been designed to last 150 years.

Come and get a sneaky behind the scenes look at this massive milestone moment.

Snowy has been part of the community for more than 75 years, and it’s a relationship that we don’t take for granted.

Our first ever community benefits report has been launched at two special events in Cooma and Tumut, formally recognising the contribution that Snowy makes to the community.

We could tell you about the millions of dollars that Snowy invests in local suppliers and the flow on effects for the local economies, or the community and STEM grants we provide to local schools and community groups to bring ideas to life... but it’s the stories that are in this report that are the real highlight.

For example, Snowy’s relationship with the Clontarf Foundation has led to an academy in Tumut, improving the education, life skills, and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men.

Or the Snowy STEM fund grant for Cooma North Public School that went towards purchasing robotics kids for the kids, developing our future renewable energy superheroes... and putting a massive smile on the faces of the kids of course!

While it’s nice to have this contribution on paper, this report serves as a reminder for us that it’s more than generating electricity, it’s about generating opportunity as well. It’s something we are very proud of.

Dave’s the best… no seriously. That’s the caption. He’s awesome 😍

He’s been working for Snowy on 2.0 for four years, and has played a massive role in helping to keep everyone safe on site.

As Dave puts it, his role is to facilitate people going home safely, and on a massive, complex construction site like Snowy 2.0 that’s not something we take for granted.

In an environment that is always changing, with literally thousands of moving parts, Dave and the team play a crucial role in keeping our people safe.

Stirring moments this morning at our Snowy 2.0 worksites, as we came together to honour those who have served.

ANZAC Day means a lot to Snowy.

Some of the early migrants who came to this great country to build the original Snowy scheme were seeking a new start after fleeing war torn Europe. There were also Australian ex-service men and women who, in searching for work after the war years, found a home in the Snowy Mountains.

The infrastructure that rose up out of the peaks and valleys in a land that was healing from the wounds of war is one example of the legacy they left behind.

We can also feel their spirit in the innovation, drive and determination to contribute to something greater than themselves that still exists at Snowy today.

We will be forever grateful for the sacrifice that these brave men and women made in defence of their country.

Lest we forget.

With its location on the doorstep of Kosciuszko National Park and on the way to Selwyn Snow Resort, Adaminaby continues to play an important role for workers, visitors and families travelling through the region.

A simple project but one that has delivered real benefits for road safety, tourism and the local economy.

So next time you're travelling on the Snowy Mountains Highway, stop in, support some local businesses and of course, get a selfie with The Big Trout!
