Well, it’s ! What better opportunity to celebrate the delightful combination of water and gravity that helps provide stability and reliability to a transforming energy grid! ⚡️🔋💧

The concept of pumped hydro has been around for decades - and takes advantage of weather and market conditions to store energy when it’s abundant, and send it out when you need it most.

This is the concept that will make Snowy 2.0 such an asset for us, and with a design life of 150 years, generations of Australians will benefit from the work we are doing just up the reservoir from here.

What does it take to power the future? ⚡

Angus swapped his everyday routine for a massive career leap in the Snowy Mountains. Now, he’s helping build Snowy 2.0, which is, basically, Australia’s biggest battery.

By using surplus energy to pump water uphill for storage and releasing it downhill when the grid needs a boost, this project is changing the game for energy security, stability and reliability in Australia.

For young workers like Angus, it’s way more than just a paycheck. It’s a chance to build real-world skills, work alongside industry experts, and help contribute to a project designed to provide Australia with reliable energy for 150 years!

Here’s how it works: ⬆️ Pumping mode: Water enters here using surplus energy to move uphill for storage.

⚡ Generation mode: Water flows back through our 6 reversible turbines, generating electricity for millions of Aussie homes and businesses.

To make it work, the water flow needs flow smoothly as it enters and exits the system. That’s where the massive diffuser comes in, engineered to control the flow seamlessly. 🌊

It’s tough going, but we know Aussies can do hard things. We’re building something that will provide energy stability and reliability for generations to come. 🇦🇺

DID YOU KNOW that Cooma was, arguably, the birthplace of Australian coffee culture!? ☕️

When immigrants from more than 30 countries arrived in the Snowy Mountains to built the mighty Snowy scheme, they needed something a little stronger than weak tea and mutton to help fuel their nation building efforts.

They managed to get their hands on one of the first aussie made espresso machines, and had it installed in the Pasha nightclub in Cooma’s main drag.

Today, we are proud to continue the tradition at the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre, where you can grab one of the best cups in town.

The Snowy team have completed some important refurbishment works on the transformers at our Tumut 3 power station, to keep that mighty Snowy Hydro energy moving through the grid! ⚡️💡🔌

These transformers have been doing a phenomenal job for more than 50 years, but they are beginning to show their age. They were, after all, installed in 1972 when T3 first opened!

As Snowy’s power stations begin to be called upon more and more, it’s important that these vital bits of kit stay reliable so that we can continue to provide power to millions of aussie homes and businesses, like we’ve done for 70 years!

We’re building a massive power station for Australia’s biggest battery nearly 1km underground! 🫪😮‍💨🤯

The first permanent concreting works are currently underway, setting the stage for Snowy 2.0’s 6 massive, ginormous, humongous reversible turbines and generators.

Excavation is almost finished too! A super effort from the team.

This is one of the most important pieces of energy infrastructure in Australia’s history.

Snowy 2.0 will provide stability and reliability to the grid, as coal fired power stations retire and we transition to renewables.

We will help prevent wholesale price spikes with our ability to fire up in minutes, and give the grid the boost it needs to keep millions of Aussie homes and businesses powered up.

Of all of our assets, dams are probably the most underrated ✊🫡❤️

While turbines and generators get the glory, dams sit stoically performing their work without fuss or drama. Content in their role… ok maybe it’s not that deep, but dams are cool, ok!?

If you’ve ever driven to the NSW snow fields, it’s likely you would have driven over and past Jindabyne Dam. But have you ever wondered how it works?

There’s some world first engineering happening deep underground in the Snowy Mountains, and it’s helping to build Australia’s Biggest Battery for you to enjoy!

Constructing Snowy 2.0’s incline pressure shaft involves a special tunnel boring machine, digging upwards at an angle of 25 degrees (a gradient of 47%).

Water will run through this shaft and into our power station to spin turbines and generate electricity for millions of Australian homes and businesses.

That’s a lot of pressure to deal with, and it has to last 150 years! To deal with that pressure, we are using world first technology on our tunnel segments. Tha means the tunnel gets stronger as the pressure increases. If you’re not impressed by that then I’m not here!

But why are we doing this?

Australia needs energy stability and reliability as we move away from fossil fuels and embrace more solar and wind. Snowy 2.0 will provide that stability and reliability by storing excess wind and solar when it’s not needed, and sending out when you need it most.

It’s big, it’s complicated and it’s tough - but Australians can do hard things and we have our eyes firmly focused on providing an asset for Australians to benefit from for generations ❤️

For the Dean family, the Snowy project is more than just a job, it’s a legacy ❤️

With their grandfather and father having worked on the early Snowy Scheme, Tim and Hunter Dean are now proudly working side by side to deliver Snowy 2.0, one of the most important energy projects in Australia’s history.

It’s a unique mix of hard work, heritage, and plenty of good natured banter while helping to build Australia’s biggest battery 🔋

Happy Father’s Day, fellas! Thank you for your hard work.
