Your vet can test for insulin resistance before it leads to laminitis and potentially devastating hoof damage.

Many horses show signs long before they become lame. A simple blood test can help identify horses at risk, allowing management changes to be made before irreversible damage occurs.

This weekend we were fortunate to be part of an incredible case study, following the journey of a pony affected by laminitis. Seeing the radiographs, hoof changes and rehabilitation process firsthand reinforced a simple but powerful message:

Prevention is always better than rehabilitation.

If your horse is carrying extra weight, has a cresty neck, or is an “easy keeper”, it may be worth discussing insulin testing with your veterinarian.

A blood test costs far less than a rotated pedal bone. 👣

🐴 Have you checked your horse’s hooves lately? 🐴

Winter has arrived, the paddocks are muddy, and many horses have been turned out for a well-earned break. But while riding schedules might slow down, hoof growth doesn’t stop just because it’s cold.

Long toes, chipped feet, flares and imbalance can creep up quickly over winter and often aren’t noticed until spring rolls around.

This weekend James is at the Vet/Farrier Symposium, investing in further education and keeping up with the latest hoof care and farriery practices. But when he’s back, it’s business as usual — and we’d love to see the diary fill up again!

Take a quick walk out to the paddock, have a look at those feet, and if it’s been a while since your horse was trimmed or shod, now is the perfect time to get them booked in.
