That balance is often overlooked.

A retail security officer may need to observe suspicious behaviour, support staff, respond to incidents and maintain a visible deterrent.

But they are also operating in front of genuine customers.

Professional presentation, communication and judgement therefore matter just as much as physical presence.

A good retail security scope should make clear:

• what the officer is expected to observe
• when an incident should be escalated
• who should be contacted
• how incidents are documented
• how staff and customers should be approached
• what sits outside the officer’s authority

Putting a guard at the entrance without clear procedures is not a complete loss-prevention strategy.

Good security should reduce the management burden, not create another one.

Good construction security starts with understanding how the site actually operates.

Before a guard starts, there should be clarity around:

• authorised access
• visitor and contractor procedures
• delivery movements
• restricted areas
• site induction requirements
• escalation contacts
• incident reporting
• after-hours expectations

Construction sites change quickly. Contractors arrive, equipment moves, access points change and new risks can appear during different stages of the project.

That is why the security scope should evolve with the site.

For me, one of the biggest signs of a well-managed security service is simple:

The Site Manager should not have to repeatedly explain basic instructions to the security team.

Proper briefing, communication and supervision should happen before problems occur.
