Brad takes us through a whirlybird installation that shows exactly what not to do. On a tiled roof, sealing the entire base plate with silicone can trap moisture and cause water to dam instead of flowing away correctly. The screws used here are also too long and aren’t the proper button screws for the job. A quality whirlybird should come with the correct screws, fittings and storm bracket needed for a proper installation. Using the right materials and allowing water to drain naturally can help prevent much bigger roofing problems down the track.

A reminder for storm season ⛈️ If there’s active lightning, hail or dangerous weather happening, roofers can’t safely get onto roofs during the event. Your insurer or emergency service crews will generally attend first to make things temporarily safe and stop immediate water entry. When roof paint starts bubbling, the problem often goes back to the primer and preparation underneath it. Previously painted roofs require a WB primer, even when the existing coating appears to be in good condition. Its thinner consistency allows it to pe*****te the surface, bind any small remaining flakes and create a stable base for the next two coats of paint. Bare concrete tiles require a different approach. A platinum primer helps seal the porous tile so the first coat of paint isn’t absorbed into the surface. This allows the final coat to sit properly on top and provide a much better finish. The right coating system from the beginning can make all the difference to how a restored roof looks and performs.

This roof shows why every stage of the coating process needs to be done properly. The large bubbles were likely caused by paint being applied before the water-based primer had fully dried. Once the paint trapped that moisture underneath, the heat from the sun began pulling it toward the surface, creating the bubbling you can see across the tiles. Unfortunately, repairing this kind of paint failure isn’t as simple as applying another coat. The loose coating needs to be stripped back before the roof can be prepared and restored correctly, adding more work and expense for the owner. Taking the time to let each product dry properly can make all the difference to the final result.
