What insurance should your builder have?

It might not be the most exciting part of planning a new home or renovation… but it’s an important question to ask before work begins!

In NSW, homeowners should check that their builder has the appropriate, current insurance in place for the work being carried out.

Depending on the project, this can include Home Building Compensation (HBC) cover and contract works insurance, alongside other relevant cover.

For residential building work over $20,000, HBC cover is generally required, and you should receive a certificate of insurance before paying your builder any money (including a deposit), or before work begins.

Building a home is a huge investment. Don’t be afraid to ask about the paperwork as well as the pretty stuff! 🏡

If you’re looking at a block on bush fire prone land, your Bush Fire Attack Level (BAL) is something you’ll want to understand early in the process.

Your BAL assesses the potential level of exposure to bushfire hazards and can influence parts of your build, including:

🌿 Decking and outdoor areas
🚗 Access to the property
