Raw water vs drinking water: what’s the difference? 🤷‍♂️

Believe it or not… the water in our dams and rivers isn’t the same water that comes out of your taps.

When rain falls across Greater Sydney’s catchments, it flows into creeks, rivers and dams. The water found in dams and other catchments is untreated, or raw water, which is managed by WaterNSW.

That raw water then comes to us, where we treat every drop at our filtration plants to meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines — turning it into the clean, safe drinking water you know as Sydney Water.

But it doesn’t stop there.

We test your water constantly, from catchment to tap, carrying out around 70 different checks for things like taste, odour, colour, microorganisms and chemical balance.

So every time you fill up a glass, you’re not just getting water — you’re getting water that’s been rigorously treated and tested every step of the way 💧
