BIG CHANGE FOR EV OWNERS IN QUEENSLAND

As of 1 October 2026, the rules around single-phase home EV chargers have changed.

Until now, a single-phase EV charger would generally need to be limited to 20A, around 4.6kW, unless it was connected using an Energex or Ergon Energy network management solution.

That restriction has now been removed.

✅ A suitable single-phase home can now have a 32A EV charger running at up to 7.4kW without the previous active-management device requirement.

That means faster home charging and a simpler installation for many Queensland EV owners.

Your electrician still needs to assess the electrical installation, including the existing supply, maximum demand and circuit protection, before running the charger at 32A.

Already have a charger limited to 20A?

Depending on the charger and how the original circuit was installed, you may be able to have it increased to 32A. We can assess the installation and confirm what your home can safely support.

I seem to be doing NBN guys job a lot lately, another NBN line located because the NBN guy said “it’s not coming in the garage” surprise surprise it’s coming in the garage.

Neat little hole to be covered by the nbn box.
Also, power point to be added for the nbn box.

Did you know...
Most homes weren't designed to handle EV charging, they were designed for lights, power points and maybe a thirsty airconditioner.

That's a problem 🚨 because EV chargers can draw more power than all your appliances combined.

Adding an EV charger without getting the house electrics ready first is like rolling out solar incentives before the grid was ready to handle the excess solar. Great at first, expensive to fix later.

(Or like promising 1.2m new homes in 5 years and ignoring the tradie shortage)

Unfortunately for EV owners, you could throw a thong 🩴 out your front door and hit an electrician who would love to install a dodgy EV charger for you. They probably mean well, but unless they're staying up to date with the rules and regs, what they don't know becomes your problem.
