Out with the bamboo and in with beautiful native plants! We’ve added warm, sculptural Corten steel to create a modern, earthy finish that will only get better with age.
Now comes the exciting part—waiting and watching as the plants settle in, grow and flourish.

This new water-wise, sustainable garden will use fewer resources while providing food, shelter and habitat for our backyard animal friends, including birds, bees, butterflies and lizards. 🐝🦋🐦
We can’t wait to see how this space evolves! More professional photos coming soon :)

Grass day! 🌱

It’s always satisfying seeing a project come together. After plenty of levelling and a bit of careful planning, we’ve transformed what was once an eyesore dirt patch into a fresh new lawn of drought-tolerant buffalo.

A simple change, but one that completely transforms the space — greener, cooler and ready to be enjoyed!

Another little patch brought back to life. 🌿

💧 Water smarter, not more.

One of the easiest ways to improve your garden’s health while reducing water use is by installing the right irrigation system.

🌱 Water-wise sprayers and drip irrigation deliver water where it’s needed most—at the root zone—reducing evaporation, runoff, and wasted water.

Benefits of a water-wise irrigation system:
💧 Uses significantly less water than hand watering or standard sprinklers.
🌿 Encourages deeper, healthier root growth.
🌞 Waters efficiently during hot Australian summers.
🍃 Helps reduce weeds by only watering the plants you want to grow.
⏰ Saves time while keeping your garden looking its best.

Whether you have a native habitat garden, productive veggie patch, or established landscape, a well-designed irrigation system can make a huge difference to plant health and your water bill.

Thinking about upgrading your irrigation or installing a new system? We’d be happy to help design a solution that’s tailored to your garden.

🌿 Elaeocarpus reticulatus🌿
Commonly known as the Blueberry Ash, this versatile Australian native is loved for its delicate flowers, vibrant blue fruits, and excellent screening ability.

🌸 Produces masses of pink or white fringed flowers that attract pollinators
🫐 Bright blue fruits provide a valuable food source for native birds
🌳 Makes an excellent screening plant thanks to its dense foliage and upright growth habit
☀️ Thrives in full sun to part shade and adapts to a range of well-drained soils

Found naturally along Australia’s east coast, the Blueberry Ash is equally at home in native gardens, suburban landscapes, and habitat plantings. Once established, it’s low maintenance, drought tolerant, and rewards gardeners with year-round interest.

A beautiful native that offers privacy, colour, and habitat value all in one package 🌿🫐

🌱 A little personal project begins 🌱

Even though I’m renting, I’ve been wanting to build a small vegetable garden for a long time. With rising costs and a bit of uncertainty in the world, it felt like the right time to just get started.
I reached out to my landlord (good bloke), sent through a rough plan, and got the go-ahead. His response — nothing tastes better than homegrown veggies — was all the encouragement I needed.

So we got to work. I roped in the other half of Hakea Gardens and started building a retaining wall to raise the beds and level out the space.

The goal with this one is simple: keep it affordable. Using reclaimed and found materials where possible, with just a few new additions (like timber for the beds). Proof that you don’t need a huge budget to create something special. (An addiction to marketplace helps)

I’ll be sharing bits of the build along the way — showing that this is a very achievable project with a pretty rewarding outcome 🌿

Side note: If you’ve been thinking about putting in a veggie patch, feel free to reach out — happy to help or jump in on the build. We’ll bring the know-how… and the dance moves 🕺🌱
