Client rang this morning. Burning smell coming from the meter box.
Found a ceramic fuse that had been overheating. Scorch marks on the panel behind it. That board has been running the whole house on fuses with no safety switch protection.
Talked the client through what safety switches actually do, got the go ahead, and had the new board in the same day. New main earth while we were there too.
If you can smell anything from your switchboard, turn the main switch off and call someone. A burning smell is not something that settles down on its own.

Saturday morning. Phone rings. No power to the house and a burning smell in the meter box.

The main switch had melted clean off the board. That is the switch every single circuit in the house runs through.

Old board out, new one in, safety switch on every circuit. Power back on the same day.

If your board is buzzing, warm to touch, or tripping for no reason, get someone to look at it. It does not fix itself.

The old fuse board couldn’t do anything about it. Ceramic fuses, no safety switches, likely original to the house. Fuse wire protects cables, not people.

We stripped it out and fitted a new switchboard with safety switches on every circuit. Faults that would have kept burning on the old gear now trip in milliseconds.

Two takeaways from this one. If your board still runs ceramic fuses, it’s overdue. And bin the cheap powerboards, they’re behind more house fires than most people realise.
