Do you recall back in December 2023 when the ACT Labor Party and ACT Greens legislated to shut off any new additions to Canberra's natural gas network? This was done to keep the ACT in line with the Government target of no natural gas connections by 2045.

However the change also hit some homes who are now unable to repair their gas heating without disconnecting from the network for a short period of time. Although the Government has not legislated any plan to strip homes of their existing gas heating, their 2045 target makes their future intentions very clear.

In a recent article in the City News Joe Prevedello CEO of Master Plumbers ACT raised concerns around the transition away from gas.

Mr Prevedello mentioned there is also an increased likelihood that the strain on the system will cause blackouts across the Territory as we saw in 2025. He said that "The ACT Government's decision to close our natural gas network doesn't make any sense. It diminishes household energy and heating security, along with consumer choice, by effectively forcing resident to throw all of their eggs into one basket with electricity."

The Canberra Liberals will always stand for choice in how people power their homes. We believe that giving residents more choice will lead to better outcomes for Canberra. That is why we have opposed Labor and the Greens natural gas transition plan. We are seeing the impact of this plan is being felt by the community more and more each day.

Do you think the Government should revisit their gas transition plan? Are you confident that you will be able to affordably heat your home this winter?

The Master Plumbers ACT team including IPG Canberra and Level Canberra spent much of Wednesday engaged with soon to be local school-leavers interested in taking up a trade at the National Careers Week Pop Up Expo!

Thanks to Master Builders Association ACT for hosting us and the National Electrical & Communications Association for the further collaboration!

I'm sure we inspired some future plumbers, drainers and gasfitters with the terrific demonstrations organised by Terry and Blake from IPG Canberra and Tom, Ash and Sam from Level Canberra!

As always great to see Sue and Geoff from Mas National flying the flag as well.
