Good advice for NSW shooters from Robert Borsak: "Let’s start with the important part. Do not break the law. If a lawful deadline, direction or notice applies to you, obtain proper advice and comply with it.

However, do not confuse the opening of the Minns Government’s buyback with a requirement to surrender your fi****ms immediately. Based on the Government’s announcements and its Budget Estimates evidence, there are good reasons not to rush."

After you make the bone stock the softened bones can be fed to chickens or used as compost/fertiliser. No part of any rabbit needs to be wasted - another good reason to avoid using poisons such as 1080 and Pindone.

There’s a lot to digest in this article from Region Canberra today. One thing is clear from the comments on their page, many non-shooters still don’t understand why anyone would have or need more than four rifles (the new limit for hunters in NSW) or ten rifles (the new limit for farmers and pest controllers in NSW).

If you’re following this page you probably don’t need an explanation, but in the ACT each new PTA requires a genuine reason prior to being accepted. Genuine reasons include various calibres and actions and designs meant for specific shooting competitions, styles, species and in the case of regular hunters and pest controllers; you may have three .22s with different scopes/sights/set-ups. Multiply that by four or five calibres for different species. Plus shotguns. Plus air rifles. Many families also have much loved heirlooms such as dad’s or granddad’s cherished shotgun or deer/fox/rabbit hunting rifle and/or shotgun.

The caps in WA, NSW and the ACT are arbitrary limits designed and imposed by people who do not shoot competitively or professionally and do not understand fi****ms. And the buybacks are unnecessary, and as this article explains, unfair to lawful fi****ms owners.

There will be many unintended consequences of these new laws, including political ones.
