More architectural inspiration from Denmark.

Half timbered buildings are built around a structural timber frame, traditionally joined with mortise and tenon connections secured by timber pegs rather than nails or screws. It's a construction method that's been used for centuries, creating strong, flexible structures that can move, settle and be repaired over time.

Rather than remaining unchanged, these buildings evolve through generations of maintenance and adaptation. Their leaning walls, bulging facades and crooked lines tell the story of centuries of use, repair and craftsmanship.

While we're rugging up for winter in Canberra, Tom's been making the most of the Danish summer. One of the highlights so far: Denmark's oldest half timbered house, still standing centuries later.

We’ll handle the thermal performance, makes it look this good.

The polished concrete throughout this home helps regulate temperature year round thanks to its thermal mass, making it one of our go to choices for energy efficient builds.

A great day at Sustainable House Day last week!

Tom shared the story behind his home and the thinking that went into the design and build, and we had a fantastic turnout across the day.

Always good to open the doors, share what we’ve learned, and hopefully pass on a bit of inspiration along the way.

A small detail with a long history.
Made in Copenhagen over 20 years ago during Tom’s carpentry apprenticeship. Proof that good things tend to stick around.

What makes a house feel like home?

Spaces that feel warm, lived in, and made for everyday moments.

At 35 Degrees, we believe thoughtful design is about more than performance. It’s about creating spaces that genuinely feel good to live in.

Sustainable House Day is this weekend, and tickets are almost sold out! Come and see this home in person, learn more about our process, and chat with the team.

Built with hempcrete, low VOC materials, and a focus on keeping the carbon footprint as low as possible, Tom’s backyard studio is a great example of how thoughtful material choices can shape a healthier, more sustainable space.

If you’re curious about the process behind it all, Tom will be opening both his home and studio on May 17 as part of Sustainable House Day, sharing the ideas, materials, and decisions behind the project.

Come have a look through the finished space, ask questions, and see what’s possible.
