Although I haven’t posted on our socials for a little while, it’s been a big couple of months at The Nixon Plumber.

We’ve recently taken on an apprentice and expanded the team with another experienced plumber, which means we’re now able to service most heat pump hot water systems across Canberra.

We’re also offering affordable gutter cleaning services heading into winter, which is the perfect time to clear leaves and prevent overflowing gutters and stormwater issues.

It’s been a busy period behind the scenes and we’re looking forward to continuing to grow and improve our services across Canberra.

What’s water hammer? 🔨💦
In simple terms, it’s a shockwave inside your pipes. It happens when water moving at high speed is forced to stop or change direction suddenly—like when a tap snaps shut or a washing machine valve closes.
That "bang" you hear in the walls is the energy of that water slamming into the pipe walls. While it might just sound like a noisy nuisance, it’s actually a sign of stress on your plumbing that can lead to:
Damaged Appliances: It can wear out the internal valves in your dishwasher or washing machine.
Weakened Joints: Repeated "hammering" can loosen pipe clips and lead to hidden leaks behind your walls.
Burst Pipes: In severe cases, the pressure surge can be strong enough to cause a pipe to rupture.
In Canberra, we often find it's caused by high water pressure or loose pipework in older homes. The good news? It’s usually a straightforward fix, like installing a water hammer arrestor or a pressure-limiting valve.

I will still be answering the phone for emergency jobs, I have some contingencies for emergency jobs over the christmas break

Otherwise I will be back into it on Tuesdat the 6th of January.
