🚽 What is an overflow relief gully—and why does your home need one?

An overflow relief gully, or ORG, is the grated drain found outside many homes. It gives sewage a lower, safer place to escape if the sewer becomes blocked, helping prevent it from backing up through your toilet, shower or floor wastes.

A nearby fixture—often a basin—regularly sends water through the gully to maintain its water seal and stop sewer smells.

To help it work properly:

• Keep the grate loose and clear of soil, leaves and garden mulch.
• Never seal it, cover it or build the surrounding ground above it.
• If wastewater is overflowing from it, stop using water inside and call a plumber—the sewer is likely blocked.

And yes, Canberra locals may notice a familiar Belco landmark watching over this one. 🦉

I recently completed a Stiebel Eltron heat-pump fault-finding course.

Heat pumps are becoming more common around Canberra, and when something goes wrong, simply guessing and replacing parts isn’t good enough.

The training gave us a better understanding of how Stiebel Eltron WWK heat pumps operate, what the different faults mean and how to properly diagnose the cause of a problem.

I’m always looking to improve our knowledge so we can give customers an accurate diagnosis and honest advice about whether their system should be repaired or replaced.

On this day in 1974, Richard Nixon resigned as President of the United States. As the accidental namesake of The Nixon Plumber, we feel obliged to mark the occasion. Unlike Richard, when we find a leak, we fix it—and we keep the tapes strictly for plumbing. 🔧💧

Most hose taps come fitted with a cheap plastic tap washer (jumper valve). We replace it with a brass one before we install the tap. It only costs a few dollars, but it's one of those little details that can make a big difference.

Although I haven’t posted on our socials for a little while, it’s been a big couple of months at The Nixon Plumber.

We’ve recently taken on an apprentice and expanded the team with another experienced plumber, which means we’re now able to service most heat pump hot water systems across Canberra.

We’re also offering affordable gutter cleaning services heading into winter, which is the perfect time to clear leaves and prevent overflowing gutters and stormwater issues.

It’s been a busy period behind the scenes and we’re looking forward to continuing to grow and improve our services across Canberra.
