πŸŒ– SPRING MOONLIGHT & PLANETARY PAIRINGS! πŸ–€

Happy late-October, skywatchers!

Following the spring equinox, our daylight hours continue to expand, bringing beautiful warmer evenings. This Saturday night features a brilliant 96.5% Waxing Gibbous moon dominating our northern skies. While this bright lunar light will wash out the finer shooting stars from the peaking Orionid meteor shower, it sets up an exceptional night for viewing bright planetary targets and watching the river cliffs glow under a crisp lunar spotlight.

πŸͺ [Planetary Highlights]: Look West immediately after dark! Venus is shining beautifully as the prominent Evening Star until it sets at 8:43 PM. Turning toward the East, Saturn is also perfectly positioned, riding high alongside the bright moon and offering steady, highly visible viewing all night long.

[The Moonlit Showcase (9:03 PM Onwards)]: Clear, bright skies. Because the massive moon climbs above the horizon well before dark, it will already be high in the sky the moment evening astronomical twilight wraps up at 9:03 PM. This intense lunar light acts as a natural light source, making it an excellent window for nightscape photographers to use lower ISO settings to capture sharp, well-defined textures on the river cliffs, waterways, and mallee vegetation all night long.

πŸͺ SATURN AT ITS BEST & DARK SKY WINDOWS! πŸ–€

Happy mid-October, skywatchers!

We have some spectacular targets lined up for the weekend. The big news is that Saturn has just made its closest approach to Earth for the year, meaning it is shining at its absolute brightest and will be up all night long! Even better, our evening moon remains a thin crescent that sets shortly after midnight, giving us a magnificent window of deep, undisturbed dark skies later in the night.

Moon Phase: Waxing Crescent πŸŒ’ (~37.4% illumination)
Punyelroo, SA | 34.60Β° S, 139.54Β° E

πŸŒ™ [WEEKEND SNAPSHOT] πŸ–€

πŸͺ [Planetary Highlights]: Look East the moment twilight drops! Saturn is perfectly placed as a brilliant, steady golden light, visible all night long and offering incredible telescope views of its ring system. Over in the West, Venus continues to put on a stunning show as the primary Evening Star until it sets at 8:28 PM.

[The Midnight Dark Sky Window (12:59 AM Onwards)]: Pure darkness. While our 37% crescent moon will provide a soft ambient glow to the landscape during the first half of the evening, it slips below the western horizon at 12:59 AM on Sunday morning. From that exact minute until dawn, the reserve returns to a 100% ink-black canvas, perfect for capturing deep-space objects and tracking the spring constellations.

WATCH: Late-Season October Milky Way Guide β€” Shifting Focus! 🌌✨

If you missed the early October new moon window, don't pack your camera gear away just yet! While we are entering a bright moonlit stretch this week, October still has one final dark-sky trick up its sleeve.

For our mid-week learning feature, we are showcasing the premium video guide by our fantastic regional partner, volunteer, and citizen science educator, Matt Clarke from Odyssey! πŸ€πŸ–€

Matt’s Late-October Field Strategy (South Australian Reference):

⚠️ The Current Write-Off Block: October 15–27. The evening sky will be dominated by moonlight, masking the fine details of the Galactic Core.
πŸ”₯ The Late Backup Window: October 28–31! This is our final dark-sky pocket of the month, offering a short evening shooting window right before the moon rises.
🌌 The Low-Horizon Catch: Because it's late in the season, the core will be sitting much lower in the West. Matt recommends changing your composition to utilize an open river layout, a coastline, or an open paddock foreground to clear the tree line!

πŸͺ Bonus Planet Viewing: If you are heading outside this week despite the moonlight, Saturn is in a prime position for backyard telescope viewing.

This late-month dark window leads beautifully into our upcoming public community events at the end of October. Learning how to track and respect these shifting cosmic windows is exactly why our daily mission to preserve regional darkness matters so much.

πŸŒ– ASTRONOMICAL SPRING & THE MIDNIGHT MOON! πŸ–€

Happy October, skywatchers!

Following the recent spring equinox, our daylight hours are stretching longer and longer, setting up some beautiful weekend weather. We have some great news for anyone planning a trip out to the reserve this weekend: the weather forecast is set to be completely clear, and the moon will not even rise until well after midnight! This means our skies will be perfectly ink-black and free from lunar light for the first half of the night.

Please note: Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday at 2:00 AM. All data listed below operates on standard Saturday night timing before the clocks shift forward an hour.

Palmer, SA | 34.85Β° S, 139.16Β° E

πŸ“· [WEEKEND SNAPSHOT] πŸ–€

πŸͺ [Planetary Highlights]: Look West immediately after sunset! Venus continues to steal the show as the brilliant Evening Star, blazing bright in the twilight sky until it sets at 8:52 PM. Over in the East, Saturn is also perfectly positioned, offering pristine visibility for telescope tracking all night long.

[The Midnight Void (7:43 PM – 12:43 AM)]: Total darkness! Because the moon does not climb over the eastern horizon until 12:43 AM early Sunday morning, the moment evening astronomical twilight wraps up at 7:43 PM, the RMIDSR plunges into darkness. This five-hour dark window is a dream for photographers and star-spotters looking to view the cosmos with zero moon interference.

The Art of Deep Sleep β€” Understanding Dormancy

If Senescence is the "shut down," Dormancy is the essential sleep that follows.

To conclude our series of ALAN on Flora, we are looking at the final survival state: Dormancy. This is not "death" or "failure"; it is a sophisticated biological strategy that allows our Mid Murray natives to survive the most brutal parts of the year by slowing their metabolism to almost zero.

πŸŒ‘ The Signal: Native species like the Mallee Box and Silver Daisy-bush rely on the natural, consistent darkness of the RMIDSR to signal that it is time to stop active growth and enter "energy conservation mode."

πŸŒ‘ The ALAN Impact: For our followers in the city (Bortle 6+), Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) creates a "Perpetual Spring." Because the tree never "sees" the darkness, it never receives the signal to sleep.

πŸŒ‘ The Result: This leads to Tree Exhaustion. A tree that is forced to stay active 24/7 drains its internal "battery," leaving it with no reserves to fight off pests, drought, or the sudden extremes of the South Australian climate.
To care for the Land, we must allow our flora the luxury of a dark Sky.
